My friends 88' GT its auto, sux balls, he let me use it to take it out for a while, and it started knocking, uhm any one know what it could be? some say wheel bearings? others say transmission, (by some i mean people that dont work on cars for a living, and just wanted to get their 2 cents in.. :s) the sound comes from the front driver side of the car... it sounds like something is wrapped around the wheel and knocking o something, and the faster u go, the louder, and faster it bangs... is this rod knocking? he just took the car out to for a 20mile ride.. and nothng... but last night it wouldnt shut up... and i was driving it slow... any one know where we should be begin to look at? *ps sorry for the long read.

Well if it stopped today , then my friend you hit something maybe a dead animal and while the cat was trying to find something to eat and you wacked the living crap out of him sending him twurling around the radials until you pulled into the garage and it fell off...

Sounds like that usually come from the axles- and if you thru a rod you not driving 20miles the next day. :!:

when the car is parked and you rev it, does it knock>?? Visually inspect for anything that may be dead or entangled under the car.

we rev teh engine, nada... only when u hit 2nd gear or higher... not sure if its the tranny... but something's telling me it has to deal with the wheel, and no its not someting dead, thought he would really like it to be cuz that would just need cleaning, and not buy anything...

i'll tell him 2 double check... reason why i dont think its the tranny is cuz, it doesnt happen all the time, like today we tested it out like 20mins ago, took it up to 50mph (on the streets, scarred of cops kay?) we also took it on the freeway, took it up to 70mph... and nothing... odd... we'll keep u guys updated, might help some one else once we solve it... :)

well mine had not so much a knocking as a odd tapping before it went...it only occured at certain rpms and usually the most in second gear. if you put in any Wynns stop leak like I had (or other oil thickener) I would say to get it out. hopefully yours is a different problem.

Is there any power loss or hard shifting???
Any mechanical items loose or rubbing??

Get the front up on some jack stands- and put it in gear- have your budy or you look and listen for any odd sounds of rubbing and shaking- If you fall to solve it by doing this check the grille and behind it to see if something is caught in there.

will do, no loss off handling, only u can feel the vibration of th knocking the faster u go, the harder, but some times, u drive the car, and theres no knock at all... we pull hard, and still nothing, its weird, sometimes u get it sometimes u dont... but will put it on jacks, 2morrow, day off for both of us...

O.k Just put it on stands, when we gave it gas an unusual scratching sound came from the driver side wheel. damn, what we also did find was that when we put our foot off the gas and the wheels slowed enough 'its automatic so when u leave it in D the wheels will rotate', the odd thing is that the front driver side wheel, moved, slower than the passenger wheel, it went slower, and slower, then stopped, and the driver side wheel keept moving at normal speed. But if we give it gas they both moved at the same time. Is something messed up? is it going to cost alot? can we do it or would some one have to do it?

drivers side wheel bearing is the noise
and the wheels spinning is normal. perks of an open diff. if it was limited slip or posi they would both spin.
