Hi, i just bought a 88 all-trac and im having a few problems. First was the heater problem i posted later but its fixed now . My next problem is major. 1st and 2nd gear pull hard & fine but when 3rd hits about 4k rpms, the engine revs but its not pulling very hard. 4th gear and 5th gear do it at about 3.5k rpms. It feels like the clutch is slipping or something and smells like it to0. Now when i bought the car, the guy said the engine was rebuild 60k ago and the turbo was replaced. He didn't know what was replaced in the engine & same with the turbo. The turbo is still a ct26 t4. Could very well be the supra or mr2 version instead of the celica. Note, if i ease off the throttle when i feel it "slipping" its like it catches again. Hope that all wasn't too confusing.
its your clutch slipping, replace the clutch and you will be good to go, if it was replaced when the engine was rebuilt, they went with el-cheapo clutch. you dont notice it slipping as much in 1st and 2nd because they are lower geared than the other two so the torque curve is in a different power band. i.e. 1st and 2nd rpm is like 2000-4k when it pulls however once you get it into 4 it drops down making it easier for the motor to over power the clutch. as well if you can take off in 3rd gear your clutch is bad, try it, just feather the clutch and gas till your moving in 3rd gear.
Ok, thats what i figured. Now, is it harder to replace the clutch on a 4wd than a fwd car? Can anyone post how to replace the clutch and maybe a link to where i can get a good clutch cheap. I just spent ALL my money on this all-trac, but its definatly worth it.
2 k is alot for me right now. I just spent all my money, i mean every last cent. I can maybe pull enough together for a new clutch, i would replace it myself. I had to do it on my 90 gt-s once. Is it any differant in the alltrac cuz of the AWD? Anyone make a right up of how to?
literally it's a nightmare job. i charge 900 in labor alone on this job it can be done at home but plan on not having your car for a week or so.
Mines got foglights, yours doesn't . On subject now, would http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/XTD-...ItemQQcategoryZ33730QQitemZ190090278080QQrdZ1 be safe to use? They have a site outside of ebay and have a 12 month warrenty. They seem legit.
Back off topic... his has fogs too Back ontopic. From what i hear, the alltrac is a nightmere, as in, Skills and patiance for FWD =7 Skills and patiance for Awd =10 Theres alot attached to the tranny.
I hope thats out of 1000..... i have patiance, skills is an ehhhh, but im always willing to learn. If anyone could just link me somewhere that gives specific directions on how to do it, i can see what im getting myself into.
I don't know where any links are, but www.alltrac.net on the boards there are tons of helpful posts for all things alltrac.
i will find the write up on it and no the ebay clutch and flywheel is no good. i'll find some info for you on that as well.
