Hi everyone. My name is Efrain and just recently bought my first car. 1986 Toyota celica gts hatchback. Car looks like it's been sitting for a while. Supposedly it has a new engine with 200k miles. Odo reads 365k. I don't believe the PO about engine which is why I'm going through entire car. Car jerks on 1st and 2nd gear. When I hit 3rd gear the cars stops jerking. I read about the air valves that open and close depending on rpm (VTIS) also when I give it gas on the way back down idles drops to around 500 rpm then climbs back up slowly on its own unless I give it gas again gently it picks up again fast but I also wounder if maybe the clutch needs replacing. When I hit reverse sometimes it grinds and sometimes if I slam on the clutch really hard it won't grind. Any advise or if anyone knows this symptom please do chime in! Thank you!

Anyone willing to help or know more about car than me? Or has experienced symptoms like these? Or know what the issue is? Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

grinding going into reverse probably means the reverse syncro is shot, a common problem and means you have to wait for the tranny to stop spinning (car has to stop moving) before you shift into reverse. Dropping down to 500 rpm may be a vacuum leak, check your hose from the air filter to the intake for cracks and check all your small vacuum hoses.

TVIS is closed at lower rpm to provide the engine with more low end power.

I do not know why it jerks in 1st and 2nd, does the clutch feel different for 1st & 2nd gears than it does in the other gears. is it a stock clutch

Hi thanks for the help. Found the jerking problem. Air box rubber house to throttle body had a crack. Sealed the crack and problem solved. When I go into reverse really slow I can hear a sound like marbles if I stop half way on the shift While car is still, not in motion. Also what is the reverse synco? Where is it located? The car is stock. No aftermarket stage clutch. Would like get one though. Also there's a fluid that looks like coolant dripping from the side cover of the timing belt. It collects behind a bolt on the intake manifold, cylinder #1

Hi. Thank you for the help. I found a vacuum leak. Sealed it and car idles great now. What is the reverse synco ?hiw does it work and what does it do? Is it a easy fix? Or will i have to open transmission? Car is stock. No stage clutch. might get one though. I have a leak also. Collects on a blot on the throttle body begind cylinder 1. Will inspect further. Can the throttle body be removed without lifting engine? Thanks again!

The jerking I think is your AFM or TPS. Do you have anyone you can swap out with to test them. Check all the vacuum pipes for leaks and swap them for silicone if you can
Also the intake pipe can crack
I have spares here if you need

Reverse - you must give the box chance to slow down once the clutch is in, there are no syncro's on reverse and the more it grinds the worse it will get.
Reverse is just a cog that gets jammed between 2 other gears

The green fluid is water, I suggest you change the water pump

99% the rubber hose from the AFM intake to the throttle body has a crack. more torque in 1st and 2nd gear = the engine moves more on the engine mounts. engine moves = rubber flexes = air leak = engine shuts off for a millisecond because the car has more air than the AFM measured.

Hi everyone. Thank you for the advice everyone. I found an air leak on hose on air box. Replaced it Now it runs good. I pulled out the motor because I'm getting too much blow by. Going to put some new piston rings on it. Also going to replace the water pump With new kit and gaskets kit also, and stage 3 clutch with new shocks all around.
