I have an 88 GT convertible.

My tail lights are not working, all four light bulbs. I am not sure when this started, but a Police officer noticed last night and issued a Fix it ticket.

A story. A couple days ago I jump started a van. After the van started, I rev'ed up the van to strengthen the battery. When doing this I thought I noticed a little smoke rise from my car battery (51% sure). The jumper cables were still connected at this time. I can't recall if my lights were on, but it could had been possible.

This is what I've done til now...

    - Checked the light bulbs. The brake lights are still working, so I put the tail light bulb in the brake socket and it worked. Conclusion: Tail light bulb is working.
    - Checked the light bulb sockets and they seem fine
    - Checked the tail light relay control and it was fine.
    - Checked the tail light electric connector adaptor with a voltmeter for signal. I received a signal for the brake lights but not the tail lights

From another thread, there is mention of a tail light sensor. The thread link is below. The thread has a photo of this sensor for a 4th gen hatchback, but where would/could it be located in a convertible? Sorry, but I'm not following the panel/pillar in the link. Thanks.

Is the tail light sensor what I should be looking at?

Please inform if I should be looking elsewhere.

    Thanks

perhaps the tail light sensor indeed. that is the correct picture, it's the smaller box with one plug to it, except ours should be yellow. have you checked the TAIL fuse? not sure if it's in one of the fuses in the engine bay or inside the driver's footwell, but it will be in either of those. could be worse, i jump started an F350 once and it killed my alternator LOL

    Thanks. Two questions to clarify...

    1. So I will look at the Tail light sensor. On a convertible, where is it exactly located? Driver or passenger side? I'm assuming it's near the back license plate, but on the inside.??

    2. So is there a tail light fuse? I know there's a tail light control relay (works fine BTW) next to the driver's left foot, but have not read/found anything about a tail light fuse. Please advise, thanks.

The sensor will be in the back seat on the drivers side if the car is LHD. Take the back seat out ( just the top part on the left side) and take the panel off and you will see the sensor. Check for loose wires as that was what was causing my problems. Also check the board itself for corrosion or shorts. If you need pictures or anymore help let us know :D I think the fuse is a 15 in the drivers kick.
