do you recommend changing both axles at the same time or is it usually okay to change the passenger side without changing the driver? my passenger side is ripped on both boots and my driver side seems fine. what say you for an 89 gt-s with abs?

I change only the one that is damaged.
In fact, I just replaced the driver's CV axle last week on my 86GTS and inspected and the passenger one.

Depending on what it is, that "recommended change in pairs only" stuff isn't always valid b/c the wear isn't exactly even. A lot of different things influence why one axle will break down and the other doesn't. Most times, it's unnecessary. I've always changed only single brake calipers (but not brake pads), wheel bearings, CV axles, etc. without harm. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Don't worry, nothing bad will happen.
