Hi i used some Moreys injector cleaner yesterday and filled the tank with 98 fuel, problem is im a dumbass and used about 5 times more than i should have. When i started it cold last night it struggled to idle for 5 seconds and i floored the gas and it came up, had no problem on a warm start. Same happened tonight. Should i empty the tank or work through it? I have a new fuel filter to put on. Do i need to drop the tank to empty it? Thanks
Re: too much injector cleaner I would say drive a lot of miles so it get's out of the system and fill her up again half way down a few times.
Re: too much injector cleaner maybe fill up at half a tank a couple times till you think its out, then change the fuel filter.
Re: too much injector cleaner thanks for the quick help! Ill keep driving and see what happens. been putting off the fuel filter guess its time.
Re: too much injector cleaner you can never have too much!!!! it will run like a bag of nails then free out!
Re: too much injector cleaner thanks guys, ive done half a tank and its starting much better and feels smoother when warmed up. still pings a bit tho mainly up hills at low revs in 4th/5th. ill change the filter soon and see what happens
Re: too much injector cleaner If you're pinging uphills, you might want to consider stepping up to higher octane gas or possibly using octane booster
Re: too much injector cleaner Sounds like the cold start injector gummed up which is pretty common (changed a few) My cars all have drain plugs, it's a plug with a 1/2in(3/8?) drive square hole and sits under the tank right in the middle. Time to top up with some more 98, the cleaner takes time so the longer you use what's in the tank, the better Failing that I'd re-check your cam timing and if that's OK I'd back off on the distributor a few degrees. Pinging is BAAAD news for bearings and pistons/bores A bad filter usually is felt by juddering on acceleration, but at $40 it's worth changing every few years
injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging thanks for the advice! i've used 98 octane for a few months to mask the pinging, time to fix it properly or see how farked the engine is. ive done a few half-tanks now and it been starting normally apart from a couple times when cold. here's where i now stand 1. cold start injector - should i run more cleaner or would it need to be taken out to clean up? 2. fuel filter - i just got the flared spanners for the fuel filter, just gotta give it a try. sure they're 15mm top, 14mm bottom. i've never checked my cam timing, or taken the cover off but ive read up enough to do it. 3. the engines been whirring again at idle, even after new belt/seals/water pump. how do i know if the belts too tight, as has been suggested by stig n mafix before? do i need a tension gauge or it non-adjustable? do i need to take the bottom timing cover off for a check or to adjust the tensioner? 4. do i need to take the valve covers off too? i need new seals first if i go that far. also can i change the spark plug seals just with the valve covers off? might as well if its open. 5. dizzy timing... ive read from stig to hear for the best point when turning it, ill see what happens when i get to this point. thanks a lot everyone
Re: injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging -timing belt adjusment aint to bad. you just have to take off the top cover (so engine mount has to come out to make it easy.) lossen the bolt till you can roll the tensioner toward the fire wall by hand. just a bit. like 1/4in. then retighten. -you can run the motor like this and check for noise. then either re-adjust or put it back together.
Re: injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging Keep adding cleaner periodically Change the filter I set the belt tight, loosen the adjuster & push the belt in 5mm while tightening the adjuster. I'd take the cambelt off, check the rollers 1st. Sounds like one is dry Plug seals come with plugs, no need to lift the covers? Lift the covers, check cam timing and measure the shims with a feeler gauge
Re: injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging I am a firm believer in replacing the fuel filter at regular intervals. It may not be fun to get to and it may cost a lot compared to something like an oil filter. But if your fuel filter gets so clogged that it puts a strain on your fuel pump and causes it to fail, you will really have less fun getting to it and paying for it too. I have a drain plug on the fuel tank of my 1987 ST 3SFE. To keep debris from getting to it and clogging it after changing my fuel filter recently, I drained the last 3 gallons from the fuel tank (with just a standard 3/8" rachet), filtered it through a coffee filter in a funnel, poured it back into the tank to rinse it, and repeated 3 times (when I stopped getting anything out). Seafoam is a good fuel additive for cleaning too. Tracy
Re: injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging + check timing all righty ive got the plan down, going to a mates flat, clean carport this week to check the timing. My sheds got asbestos roofing and a lot of dust so im not working in there :barf cars starting much better now, i'd like to clear the tank out when i change the filter but timing comes first. spark plug seals - thanks now i wont waste my time hunting something that isnt there valve covers - found this kit - http://kbox.ca/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/46/products_id/509 thats all i need? i'll look for the same locally timing - thanks for the tips this will be a good learnings for me. the trick is getting it started again seafoam - i haven't found it here in Perth and amazon won't ship it to me. cos its an aerosol? any substitues? thanks everyone this is a mission and a half
Re: injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging That kit won't work for you, you need the 86-89 set, try Repco/Supercheap I know S/Cheap sells them for $20ea but they don't always have stock. Appco is another but I don't know if you have a stockist - they had the distributor kit as well for $30
Re: injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging hi the cars been starting perfectly but the idle still sounds crappy so i went to toyota and on wednesday i'm picking up the valve cover gaskets. got an exam saturday so after that i can open up the timing n valve covers i have a dizzy seal kit, new rotor n cap to install when its all going on. we don't have an appco here, got Malz, supercheap, repco, auto pro. ive been looking for 2 things for ages and no locals have them. seafoam - stores ive asked never heard of it and i get the look like im a weirdo chemico paste - for scratches, recommended by yourself Stig. - looked at the UK distributors site, what kind did you refer to? http://www.chemico.co.uk/products.html ill update my thread when i get the timing checked, thanks for all helps!
Re: injector cleaner good, now to fix pinging You got the stuff from Repco? prices What are your front pads? price Chemico is a generic name - ours is in a pink tub. Any cleaning paste ie Jiff, Ajax is the same stuff. Don't rub too hard and polish it up aftrerward. Fuel filter remove Trick is to use a looooong extension bar and ratchet, you shoudn't need to climb into the engine bay apart from the bracket #10 bolts
