My wife's uncle has been a circuit race car driver. He got involved with the lemons race for fun last year, and this year he wants to build a gen 1 MR2. The question is what engine to run in it. It came with the 4a twin cam engine, and I got a hold of a 5s for him. It has a lot more torque than the 4a. He ran a similar car last year and said, the car was catching every one in the corners, but would lose them on the straights. We don't want to spend a fortune. Should we run the 5s, use the 4a w/ some engine work, or something different altogether? Before anyone says 3S-GTE! They say running a NA car for 16-24hrs is much better, and not good for turbo.
09 (3sg) would pull away from anything with a 5s on the straights. more revs. i was about equally powered to an sw20 but would watch him fall off every time he had to switch gears. couldnt catch me in the corners since we run a short tight track where fwd rules the day. the 4cyl fwd cars dominated everything at our "lemons" race, manily due to track layout. you can pull through the hairpins much faster than rwd with no real worry of spinning. 09 ran circles around aw11's, and running against sw20's makes them a much much less impressive car. -ive driven both motors. the 5s has more low end, but you cant beat the top of the 3s. theres really no stock 4cyl that i raced against that could match it. -id go 3sg all the way, or if you have a spare head try to hack together a 5sg for fun.
That's an idea! I have a stock running gen1 3SGE as a spare for my car, I also have a 2nd gen 3SGE disassembled! I don't know much about the 2nd gen. Should I save that for my Celica? Should i use the 2nd gen head on the 5s for the MR2, or take apart the gen1 and use the head from that on the MR2?
Thanks! Pretty good info there, but it seems like custom rebuilds. What kind of power do you think a fairly stock 5S block w/ a gen1 or gen2 3SGE head would make. He said he is more interested in the torque, than hp!
That's turbo isn't it? The race is 16-24hrs straight depending on the race. What he has been told is you will burn up the turbo, or won't be good for the car.
I just looked, realized that's s/c! Don't know anything about them. You think that would be ok to run that amount of time continuously?
super chargers have there own bearings and oil! you'd be fine! they dont put out as much heat as a turbo either
I did a quick search on google, can't find one cheap! We want to build it pretty cheap. The only ones i found were like a $1000!
go with the 4agze. i heard or read somewhere that they can take the 4th gen alltracs. light and powerful!
I think what we are going to do is use the 5S and bore it .40 over, and maybe entry cams. The car they ran last time did well, just needed more torque coming out of the turns. This 5s has more hp and torque than the 4age has, and then doing some work to the engine- should be really good with good drivers!
I guess there is a little modification to the mounts. He is pretty good at welding, so It shouldn't be bad.
This one is kinda beat up, but will make a great lemons car! I would still take my GT-S over it any day!
lol yea a gt-s be awesome any day! not that i would sell The Celica though. i just want one along with the fx-16
