I'm just wondering how loud is the stock muffler of an 89 gts is. When i purchased my car, the previous owner had changed the stock dual tip to a single tip and sometimes i find that it is too loud for my taste and ricey at times. I know our Car is high revving but the exhaust is too loud and not relational to the speed. Im hoping someone can maybe share how their stock dual tipped muffler sounds like and if you have suggestions on how to tame the sound. Thanks.

Mine wasn't too loud when I had it. ( The pipe before the muffler had holes) and it was still pretty quite. I have since gone to a bosal muffler and I haven't noticed a difference in sound.

I tried a stock bosal as well (dual tip), not loud at all, but rattles like hell when cold (could be because the front end of my exhaust is not oem)

Mine only rattles on heavy accel. I suspect it isn't the muffler though. I think I have bits of rust floating around in it.

The stock GTS exhaust is fairly quiet. Considering it has a 1.75" exahust pipe and resonator, it's really quiet. Maybe if you get on it hard it gets loud, but my '87 GTS never was that. Now my '89 GTS exhaust, that's another story :p

actually at idle, it is not bad... it has a deep throaty sound... the only thing is when i get to 3k rpm, i feel it is louder than it should be considering the engine rev and speed... plus, when im cruising at 70mph, and the rpm is at 3k... sometimes i feel im going to lose my hearing... maybe im not used to it yet? i know our cars are high revving but is there i way i can maybe silence it a bit? btw, i do not have the OEM dual tip... i have a single tip and i believe the opening is at lest 2.5 inches if not 3...

Can you show us a photo of your muffler? Maybe a shot showing the inside from the tip. If it's that loud at 3000, what's it like at 6000? :)

I know it is a bit rusted but im sure it does not have any holes. I also tried to capture a sound clip but i dont know how to post it... Plus the wind affects the sound

Well the outlet looks bigger than the stock GTS twin tip so that may be your solution to the noise

Will any of those universal silencer work? Anyone used them?

i would think if your car is loud with that, id check to make sure you still have the resonators aswell (iirc stock should have 2). with a good condition oem system it shouldnt be any louder that any other car....so quiet. iirc gt-s has cat-resonator-resonator-muffler. any of that stuff could be rotten on the inside aswell. maybe p.o. gutted the cat? if it has "rasp" at high rev i think a cat issue would be likely.....

Thanks for all the info. I'll save the muffler/exhaust project at a later time. My main concern now is the A/C and repaint.

i had a bosal oem replacement twin tip as well and it was quiet. it goes cat>resonator (before the 90 degree bend)>muffler. all should be 1.75 for it to be stock.

i took out the resonator as it had a hole and just had a pipe put in and it's now raspy when cold. it sounds like a honda! :(
