I'm trying to replace my rear struts and the nut that holds the stabilizer bar link to the strut housing is stuck to the threaded rod. I've tried everything I know to do but they just spin. Anyone have any experience getting these apart??

cut them off and get new ones. that's the only way i know. you can remove the plastic cover on the back of the end and get an allen key in there as well.

if you take so vise grips and clamp them on the bushing and that holds the threads in the middle from moving and then use the socked to get the nut off. This isn't good but alot better than cutting.

Crap, sounds like either way I replace them. Guess the job will have to wait til next weekend. At least I got the fronts done, although it's the rears that are totally shot - and I mean TOTALLY shot, no damping at all. It makes freeway driving fun.

it's funny that the rears blow first. both sets of mine did that. it must be from the much smaller shaft diameter on the rear.

I've got allen sockets and tried that but the inside stripped out almost immediately.

My '87 did the same thing, so I took a grinder with a 4" wheel and carefully cut a groove through the center of both the nut and the stud. This way I was able to place my 14mm wrench around the outside while holding the stud with large screwdriver, this finally broke them free. By the way I also used a bunch of PB Blaster on them to help penatrate the rust. I bought newer links from the local Pull-A-Part, cause the Toyota dealers wanted $50 a set for them, paid $2 for mine.

    racerb

Oh by the way, my future plans call for replacing these links with adjustable pieces, so I'll have front and rear links availible from like 3-4 Celis.

I took my grinder and cut the bracket off of the strut. Then once I had the strut off I could get in there with some heat and lube and a good solid pair of vicegrips. It came off
