Hey Guys, The factory muffler for the 86-89 GTS is now out of production. It has been for about a year now, as I unfortunately found out. The twin-pipe muffler was made by BOSAL, part # 228-847. (The single pipe muffler for the ST/GT is still available but I'd rather get the original one). I'm gonna call Bosal and see if they'll do a group buy. I would buy at least 2, maybe 3. No details yet but will update once I get more info. Just putting out a feeler, so if you are interested, throw out your name. Thanks!
We can still get a twin pipe rear in the UK,usually from www.tcbparts.co.uk ,from around £80 Sterling. They arent always readily available but I do know one or two people that have had to get one from here.Although its not that much more expensive to get a copy made up in stainless steel from an exhaust fabricator over here if im honest, dont know if thats a route you would be prepared to go down.Itll last longer!
I have NAPA/Bossal twin tip muffler, used only 2 months painted black... I'm in Ottawa... Id give it to you if your interested. I used it on my 89 GT-S Coupe.
Hi Dave, Sure, I'll take it! You don't need it? Does it have the inlet pipe attached like in the pic I posted? I have a relative in Ottawa, maybe they can pick it up...? I'll PM you details. Thanks
Ya, I don't need it anymore... It was to quiet for my liking . It does have the 2 footish inlet pipe that goes over the control arms. I'll grab a pic of it for you out of the car ASAP. I had a stainless twin tip made for my ST162. With tip inserts/silencers, it has a nice bark when your on it but cruising its quit, unless the inserts are out... Video below has the inserts in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PiF5b3715Q If have no prob meeting up somewhere in the Ottawa area. I'm in south Ottawa (Osgoode), about 25 min south of Parliament Buildings. Cheers!
Sent you a PM. Thanks! I need that inlet pipe so it can just bolt up Nice SS muffler. Curious, how much for that custom SS work?
I lucked out and found one twin tip aftermarket muff that was the same size ... Painted it silver. Sounds nice an throaty. Vicdat
Hey Vicdat, that is a nice looking twin-pipe! Who is the manufacturer and where did you get it? Do the hangers fit? Details please!
Sorry guys it was just a generic muff w/ two smaller pipes. My local shop (Valley Muffler) had it laying around and added the chrome tips of my choice. I replace a Midas lifetime twin pipe (stock looking with correct hangers etc)The new one didn't have any attachments or pipes... The shop just matched it up.
It prolly was...it was a perfect factory type replica with a lifetime warranty (non transferable). I was going to cheat and have the real original owner (an LA Firefighter) go with me to get it replaced for free (for the third time) since I still have the original paperwork for most of the car's early history. I sensed that the people at Midas were gong to be real dicks about it so when my local cheapie shop found the small one I just switched over for $60.00 complete. Tis the life of a thirty year old Toy...
Question... I just bought a gts. It has the twin muffler, but one is missing if that makes sense. Like its a hole. Can i get this piece anywhere?
On my old ones they were just attached with one screw that usually would get elongated and work loose. You might be able to have a local muff shop weld new ones on if the muff isn't too toasted
Not likely... Usually they have a couple different styles (I chose the slanted chrome, but he also had a rounded set) My old one was "stock-like" doubt if any of our cars still have the actual original one. We need pics haha
Yeah, the original factory ones were made by Bosal. They discontinued the twin-pipe muffler for the GTS but still make the single-pipe muffler for the ST/GT. Walker also made a direct fit twin-pipe for the GTS but have sadly also discontinued it. Our cars are 30 years old now... branman79: it'll just be a section of straight pipe. Any exhaust shop will be able to match it up fine
Last I checked, Midas showed an exact fit twin tip, but it was like $200 or so... I ended up ditching the Midas since the warrantys are not transferable (the original owner had it replaced a cou[ple time for free)
