If this were a 2000 dodge neon or something i wouldnt be asking any questions but this being a 25 year old car, the damage wouldnt be so much a big deal if it were new and i could easily find a replacement.

Fuck, well today my friend needed a ride to the bus station and on the way there going down a hill with at least a inch of pure ice that wasnt gravelled, some girl was riding my ass thinking she's stuck to the road with magnets or something, and coming to a stop for a intersection BAM got rear ended by one of those new Ford Escapes. So the height of her bumper and grill was just level with my taillights because it is lowered, pushed in the back right taillight and plastic surrounding it also the metal behind (in the trunk surrounding the tail light lens/mounting) + around the taillight and quarter panel got pushed in pretty good.

I am wondering if the repair is even possible, the girls boyfriend is a autobody guy and he says that he could cut out the metal section including the corner of the quarter panel and re shape it and weld it back into place and replace the taillight assembly. This i can see being possible but with the taillight the problem is, finding a 86 gts's taillights and plastic trim around it.

Should i trust this guy or file a report and go through insurance and get it done at a place that knows more about these cars. ???

Where could i find the taillight assembly on the internet that would replace this one.

Heres a picture of my rear end before the accident and one with a idea of what happened, ill have one of the damage tomorrow.

(im not 100% sure about the middle plastic piece it might be okay, if it was would i just have to replace the lens? Also will the new tail light come with the black plastic "trim" in between the red and yellow coloured plastic throughout the lens??)

Is it possible? and how should you go about installing the new ones?
(My brothers were cracked so we tried taking them out, HAHA good luck talk about a pain in the ASS getting them out never mind putting them in.)

Sorry about all the questions, i am just pissed off / confused as to whats going to happen with my girl, i mean look how mint the rear end was before! man whyyy did this have to happen.

Well first off u should beable to find the taillight in a local yard.....there's quite a few here....anyways you should take out the trunks interior and see what u can physically push out yourself. .....don't be afraid to put the rear seats down and got to town with your legs doing the pushing...that's how I fixed the rear of my gts coupe....... I might even be able to help u get that light....I'll hit u back up when u get the other pics up.

Promises & cars don't go together
Hitting you from behind automatically puts them at fault

Report it, claim insurance and that way it will be done properly and get them to rust proof
the boot & lid as well as it's gonna need respraying too

The light/bumper/panel/trim you can get on here in "Wanted"

Cutting panels and replacing/joining them never works well - I've tried! - always problems

I agree 100% with Francois and Stig.
Don't worry about helping them out; they were at fault.

Well its too late now, only thing i can do is go to his body shop tomorrow and im taking pictures of it before and after if im not satisfied with the repair I have a case than. In the event of private settlement you already would know the cost of the repair from a quote via bodyshop, if its under $2000 you dont file a report and dont need a accident sticker. but i have information, witnesses, i have a piece of her car and also another witness if i wanted and was to file the police report i also have pictures of my cars damage and im getting a picture of her damage as well right away (she lives close) . If i really wanted to go through insurance i definitely could, provided i have a quote from a body shop exceeding 2000. Since the cars worth 500 when i bought it, they could write it off and give me 500 bucks than i would be stuck with the body work and a written off celica.

I dont really care if they weld that shit back in whatever man i know what those body guys can do with metal i did autobody. + its not even exposed. The only thing im worried about is, if he can get the sharp folds and creases out i know its possible i seen it before.

Anyhow shes goin in tomorrow, i found some rust i would like dealt with anyway behind the bumper below the taillights, and i get the trunk that wouldnt close before fixed now it just doesnt close at all now snow can get in. I also get the passenger quarter panel popped out n painted it n that needed paint before anyway. :cheers

We'll see what they can do, :aargh its a nice body shop located on a main street in a small industrial area and its one big building of maybe 50 small body shops in the area. :fingersx :fingersx :eek:hnoes :toetap05

PICS 2MORO LATER IN THE DAY OR NIGHT.

It's their insurance - not yours that pays.
If it's not a write off they can't write it off because you got a bargain or without your permission.
I think you mean the $2000 is your excess threshold amount?

You need to insure your car for the replacement value, not the amount you paid
I'm sure even the book value would be a lot higher

Anyway I hope this works out for you, let us know what happens

Heres the damage, i have decided to get it done somewhere else and have them pay for the any metal damage (trunk and rear quarter panel too) and taillight, that shop sucked i know a good autobody shop when i see one.
Is any of this frame damage?

very much so.... but it does speak expensive tho.

alot of that can be pulled.....frame damage doesnt look bad and i wouldnt say it has any, looks like she slid right over your bumper.

Will the middle "license plate holder" black plastic piece have to be replaced? it moves around a bit now when i wiggle on it and i have subwoofers so that cant rattle, i also need to know if the lights wont seal.

Anyone else think those dents can be pulled?

As you can see in one of the pictures the metal is torn below the tail light, does that get welded? or what?

Insurance says if the repair cost more than the vehicle was bought for it would be considered a class c write off and i would be given actual cash value, or 75% of what the book says.

    something on a write off.

I dont have any records at all, the guy is still offering to do it so im probably going that route, i doubt i could find another deal like this car was.

Sorry to say this but that looks like a write-off to me (layman's opinion).
I'm certainly far from an expert, so I really do hope for your sake I'm dead wrong.
The license frame and taillight are the least of your worries; you've got some big metal damage for a 24-year-old car.

I had a dent smaller than you have on your rear quarter panel and that cost $500 to fix and that was 5 years ago. Add in the other back panel damage and I'd say you're creeping up pretty close on $2,000 worth of damage.

Make the claim so they can give you a proper and professional assessment.
You can decide after you have more information how to proceed.

Good luck and keep us posted...

BTW, there isn't an actual frame or frame rails on our cars; they're all unibody structures.
Only big-ass trucks still have frames anymore.

Anybody know if the middle "License plate holder" thing is the same on coupes and hatchbacks? and do the 86 ones differ from the others?

Well i know its big metal damage but for me to go and make the claim and go through with everything after it is written off i would end up with no car. Right now this is my way of transportation to find work right now, if i dont have this car im screwed im the least worried about the metal damage hiding behind the bumper, as long as its pulled out and painted so it wont rust down there im happy. Its metal and i have seen 1000x worse cars on the road, the unibody thing is true but i dont see anything that is important it is the piece of metal below the trunk that isnt even part of the basic unibody frame main weight supports . Maybe if it was crumpled and the bumper got pushed in 2 feet we would be talking.

I dont think i would like to write this car off, im 18 and dont have mom and dad paying my rent and paying for a new car for me when i graduate i bought my car, so if this happened to someone like that they wouldnt worry what i am worried about right now because the car isnt worth 25 thousand dollars.

Its bad enough the car has 225 thou on the body and 125 on the motor yet i pay 500 (They use the amount i paid to determine the value of the write off) and i get not much more than that back so that im going to end up with a honda accord with 350 000 kms after this car instead? fuck that i would rather save it if i can do so through private agreement.

Yup it im bringing her down to the "garage" of his tomorrow to get started on it.

Sounds like you're stuck between a rock and a hard place :(
My insurance is different, so I hope this situation works out for you.

I did this once, perhaps it will be viable for you:
    1) Get damage estimate from repair shop you want to use, but do NOT action a claim,
    2) Have at-fault driver agree to pay the repair amount by giving you a money order, certified cheque, (or in my case, $800 cash!).
This way, you get repaired at a shop you trust and no write-off status or insurance claims for your Celi.
If she's worried about her insurance rates going up, this may work for you too.

AFAIK, the 86 plate holder thing is same for years 87, 88 and 89.
I can't say if coupe and hatchbacks pieces are interchangeable or not, but
I personally wouldn't try it, as you might run into water sealing problems.

Take Ricks advice, I've done that in the past too

    Doesn't look structural at all

I think the rear plate holders are different, my Corona had an older 3piece one

A decent panelbeater won't have trouble with it, worst job is the kink in the fender panel.

If you bought the parts on here it would save a lot
