hi i've seen procedures that give a resistance at a temperature as a means of diagnosis, such as this:

1 is there a preferred method for temp reading of parts such as the block, trans, sensors etc?

2 does the temp on the graph mean the temp of the part or ambient air temp? i have no idea how hot a metal sensor would get...

3 anyone got experience with those cheapy point n click infra red temp readers from supa cheap etc? do they give accurate readings?

    thanks

Never, never, never trust a sensor!

Don't know about the cheapie ones but I've used the infrareds in racing etc - excellent
Watch carefully and you'll see pit crews using them on brakes, tyres etc all the time.

I bought a temp probe ($15) from Dick Smith for my multimeter, works great for me
