This is just an information write up on gaskets for our cars. this is meant to help you guys who need to do rebuilds and such.

    Gasket Types and Applications

-Paper - These are generally used to seal vacuum only areas like the intake manifold where heat is not an issue

-Paper and Silicon - These are used where parts may be warped or move and need the extra bead of silicon to help seal the area

-Paper and Metal - These are typically used to seal vacuum or exhaust areas like manifolds or EGR

-Hard Plastic - usually used on V style intake manifolds due to the heads moving from heating up and cooling down

-Rubber - Typically used on parts that require an oil seal where the rubber will be shaped as an O ring or reinforced with metal. Flat rubber is used on vacuum style seals that will move a lot like an old V8 carb on a tuned motor

-Silicon - pure silicon gaskets can be used where rubber can as long as things aren't too hot. these will last longer and dry rot less than rubber

-Copper - copper is used only in racing applications and requires special machining of parts that it is going to be used on

-Steel - steel is used on several parts only where things get really hot like turbos or manifolds or head gaskets

-Multi Layer Steel (MLS) - used for just about everything and reusable in most cases. this is the best gasket on the market today

-Gasket Maker (RTV) - only to be used where it is called for. this is more of a make a mess than make a gasket
