my average gas mileage isn't up to par (about 21mpg) and i don't quite know what the problem would be? so far this is what i've done:

    - new and correctly gapped spark plugs
    - new distributor cap and rotor
    - new spark plug wires
    - new air filter
    - wheel alignment with correctly inflated tires
    - car is totally cargo-less, not even a spare tire

now i know i drive a little spirited, but that shouldn't be bringin it down to 21 mpg should it? and i drive about half/half with city/highway miles.

i can play with the timing because that's the only thing i haven't touched. i don't have a timing gun to do it accurately, but i can make some adjustments periodically to see if it does anything. when i move the distributor up, is it richer or leaner? and vice-versa? sorry for the long post, but it's been bothering me haha. thanks!!!

I am running the 3SFE, with JDM header and 2.25" complete exhaust w/o a cat. Running 90mph on highways, it averages around 20mpg.

hmm, maybe i'll do the carb-cleaner bit and see what that does. my sr20 powered s13 get's better mileage and it's the same displacement, but it's illegal haha! we'll see.

I wouldnt move the distributor unless you can get your hands on a timing light.
Check and or Replace your O2 sensor. Thats usually the #1 killer of bad gas milage....other than boost. :p

wow i figured out the problem. TIMING was RIIIIIICH! i fixed it and as of today i have half a tank left and i've traveled 255 miles already WOOT! but i have another problem that i forgot to mention.

sometimes the car would run all peppy, then on other times that i would start it up, even on the same day, it'd be all sluggish. the elec. guage on the cluster reads lower than usual, and something smells like it's burning. but on the days it runs fine, nothing smells! help!!!

timing?? it was off? interesting. well that burning smell may be the alt gong bad. next time it does it i would use the old sniffer and find where that is coming from.
