Finally got the GTS back on track after months just sitting!

    Well took the car down to Roebling Road Raceway for another great NASA weekend, even got my wife to work Start for me. Oh well long story short, I was have so much fun on a handling track passing everybody, some Corvettes included, that I killed my engine. It was to be expected cause my baby had like 156,000 miles on an engine thats never been cracked open. So I've got a delima, do I drop in my JDM backup engine, or rebuild the one I've got. No matter which direction I go, an oil cooler is in my future, you know taking my own advice! My old engine builder is needing his new garage wired, so I'm thinking wiring for engine build, sounds fare to me. I would post pics of my latest adventures, but she let go in only my second session on track, and I've yet to find any pics of her at all.

    i'd drop in the jdm unopened w/ an oil cooler then rebuild the other. motor swap = 1 weekend. racing again the next.

    Put the jdm and rebuild yours so you can put that back in when this one blows you crazy bastard! haha

    Agree- use the backup- and Rebuild the one in the car- no funny business though NASA is getting strict lolol

    Hey guys, I'm finally getting the bug again to start my engine swap, family emergencies and the sort have kept me out of the shop lately. Well first off, the donor engine is nearly ready to come out of it's '88 hatch resting place. Once it's out, that cars going to the scrap yard, well of coarse after anything useable is removed. In fact it's already donated it's entire suspension system and hub/brake combo.

    An interesting thing I discovered while prepping this engine for removal, it's got lots of ways to tell it's a true JDM. First off it's got the EGR tube running from the head not the exhaust manifold, second it's got YAMAHA cast into the head, and third it's got YAMAHA molded into the timing-belt cover, right behind the 3SGE label. I'm looking forward to seeing what this engine with just the right mods will do for my racer.

    One thing I'm looking to do is replace all the intake (rubber) tubing with mandrel bent tubes, before and after the MAF. By relocating the battery to inside the car, (passenger side where seat used to be) I'll be able to build a cold-air box right behind the headlight assembly. My plan is to remove all headlight equiptment, leaving only the pop-up covers in place with new fabricated supports in their place. The result will be less hardware/weight in the nose area, plus a good soarce of cool air from the lower grill opening beneath the headlight cover. By removing the trim piece from the side marker assembly, ('86-'87 Celica) you reveal a grill of sorts, the with carefull moding could be one very good air inlet.

    I'll try to post pics of this work in progress and give updates on the work I plan to do.

    Just an update on the project. I pulled or in this case dropped the engine out of the donor car this week. Yea I found that with these cars it's easier to lower the engine down, than to raise it out the top. I used jack stands made for a 6 ton truck, which raise the car about 3 feet off the ground. I then lowered the engine down onto a rolling furniture dolly, and simply rolled it out the drivers side. I've started removing all the unnessesary parts, like A/C compressor, powersteering pump, and stock transmission. After everything is removed, I'm looking at fabbing up a new lower bracket for the altenator, so I can discard the idler pulley and all it's extra weight.

    By removing the powersteering pump and most of it's plumbing, it gives me a great place to mount a remote oil filter bracket, where the PS tank sits now. I'm going to install a take-off adapter to the engine and run Aeroquip lines to the new filter location and a front mounted oil cooler. As I talked about early on, not running a oil cooler, is what most likely killed my original engine. I want to install a Moroso roadrace oil pan with it's trap doors and better windage tray, but may settle for a stock pan and a good crank scraper, check out www.crank-scrapers.com/Toyota.html for more info. I'm also going to replace the front and rear motor mounts with new urethane peices from www.speed-source.net along with pouring my own urethane bushings for the tranny and side motor mounts.

    I'm looking for either a Celica GT or early 90s Camry flywheel, with the ring gear closest to the clutch and pressure plate side, so I can move my starter from under the exhaust manifold. As a way to direct more air straight into the oil cooler and radiator, I going to fabricate a air duct of sorts from the grill area directly into this spot. I plan on doing nearly the same thing behind the left front pop up headlight, to kinda force air to the air filter of the new air intake I'm working on. While some of these things are far from being even started on, they will be done in the not to distant future. I will try to post pics of the work as it progresses, some hopefully this week!

    Yea I'm still not completely sure I wouldn't rather have the Moroso pan and the crank scraper/windage tray set up combined. I want the crank to get just enough oil for lubing, but not enough to create friction.

    Have you thouht about getting the Crank knife edged, Would that help any with the Oil issue your having?

    The crank scrapper is a great Idea I seen the video they have on that part, Its a very functional part, Doesnt the 3SGTE Oil pan have something similiar to a "Scraper" installed from factory?

    i have looked into that and the cost does not offset the gain. plus a scraper does the same thing.
