Engine Light!

I recently bought another ST162 (off XR Pilot), and the engine light has been on ever since. I was looking at the engine today, when i seen the screws on the rocker cover were very loose, so i tightened the front ones, and turned the engine on, and the engine light was no longer on. I then tightened the rest of them, and made sure they were all tight, and when i turned it back on, the engine light was also back on. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? And what are some usual causes which make the engine light constently stay on? It not being driven for 6 weeks prior probably has something to do with it, perhaps something has seized?

loose valve covers wont cause it, and if you do tighten the screws, take the center piece off and tighten the once u cant see aswell. U can check the code to see whats wrong, but i dont know how

It's not screws... That would be way too many sensors, and would cost thousands more than the engines cost new... You might have a check engine light, due to it never being switched off with a test tool, after a few oil changes... The light will come on due to a non reset on the electrical system. It's basically telling you to change the oil, I would assume. My BMW did this a couple times... Really irritating! lol

An ST162 doesnt know when it needs to have an oil change...

Pop the bonnet. Just behind the passenger side strut tower, there will be a diagnostic connector, it has diagnostic written on the lid. Pop the lid, and you are greeted by many terminals. GRab a piece of wire 5-10cm long, strip the ends and short the terminals E1 and T1. Then go switch the ignition switch to ON, but dont start the car. If you have shorted it right, you will see a series of flashes. These can be deciphered by looking at the chart http://www.st162.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=380

    Good luck!
The codes should be cleared when u disconnect the battery for a few mins, officially, u pull the EFI main relay in the fuese box under the bonnet, for over 30 seconds i think it is......

My BMW was also OBD1. But yeah, just an example. Anyhow, yeah, that's how you get it to work, what dan said! :)

Whats not screws? I was talking about the screws in where the plugs are. And the oil is only about 300 kms old.
If its still on after i replace the o2 sensor, then i will check error codes.

You need to replace the o2 sensor first man before checking anything else out. You will get code 21 when you check the codes, because that is what I got when I checked the codes, which is why I said the o2 sensor I bought off ebay must be dodgy...

Haha, sounds good, looking forward to seeing pics and that. Your an Aussie, how quick u reckon a healthy st162 shud go 0-100? Think it shud outrun a cc lancer glxi, 1.8? What would you compare it to straight-line speed wise?

Thread is up now, pics tomorrow hopefully.
I raced my auto 1986 ST162 against my mates stock auto 1996 Hyundai Lantra, and as soon as i got into 2nd gear i was way ahead. The only mod on my auto one is a 2" cat-back exhaust. I am going to do the 0-100 test as soon as i get the chance, as well as a 1/4 mile run.

should absolutely smash a 1.8l lancer mate :)

  16. just a quick thought... might not be but i had the same issue on my 87 cadillac brougham. turns out the catalitic converter is going bad. probably isnt the issue but if you go to a mechanic and he says cat, i wanna say i thought so.

Its taking 11-12 seconds to get 0-100......I cant take it much longer! See if you can take a video of it to show me. Im suspecting TVIS probs.....

The lancer scrapes in under 10 seconds, revs a shitload quicker and just smashes the celica! WTF!?
