Does anyone know where the tensioner is to tighten up the e-brake on the st165? I pretty much have no e-bake right now and id love to fix this issue lol. Id like to know what i have to take apart in order to access the tensioner before i start taking things apart.
You got to lift the centre cover 1st I'd pull the rear disks and check the pads/drums Then adjust the pads through the adjusting holes - see pic/bgb/manual etc Then adjust the handbrake cable Sorry, the how-to on my page has been wiped
Stig has the proper sequence. Just want to add that the spec for the e-brake setting should be between 4-7 clicks.
Nope - adjuster is supposed to have 2 nuts on top, impossible to hold the bottom one. Also sometimes the cable is stiff too, no way to hold it from the top and it just turns
Funny, I've already adjusted the cable to the prefered tightness of the handbrake. I've also replaced the shoes on both sides and cleaned out the brakes(not the shoe). And still no functioning of the handbrake. Only thing that's stopping the car from moving is the Automatic's Gear selector on "P" for park.
I meant to say I cleaned out the rear drums and rear metal thing where the shoes are held. I replaced the shoes and everything is in its place. I even had a 5 year old assistant pulling at the E brake, and I can see the shoes moving. Can't figure out why the handbrake won't work as it should and hold the car.
If you can see your shoes moving, the shoes themselves need to be tightened. There's a gear in the middle of the two shoes, just above where the hub goes. Rotate it upwards to tighten the shoes. After every two or three rotations, put the drum on, pull then release the handbrake (to center the shoes), repeat process until the drum feels like it's not gonna move freely anymore on the next rotation of the gear. So anyways, I haven't had a strong ebrake for a long time now, so I went to tackle it, I had new shoes and drums and did what I just described above, it was better, but it was still taking 8-10 clicks to not roll down a hill (reliably). Next was the handle. I was able to adjust it from the top without taking any interior. I was almost there, getting down to about 6-8 clicks to what feels safe, one more turn....SNAP. cable broke just under the handbrake lever... :cuss :aargh
^That sucks. If it's out by one click, but still holds the car on an incline, I wouldn't worry too much.
perfectionist kicked in lol. i've been on some hills where the ebrake didn't hold me steady so i thought i'd do that...hope ebrake replacement isn't too bad...
Damn. Well, I did adjust the star gear, on both shoes. I'm guessing it's not adjusted enough. I'm gonna have to pull the drum off and do it again. :banghead That sucks how your brake line broke. Did you check your brakefluid throughout that time?
^ yup, it was fine. yeh i had to take out the drum about 5 times to get it exactly where i want it to be.
ive had this problem as well...how is your drum dimensions? are they new? if not get them checked.....i replaced my entire handle for one at the wreckers...very easy to do.
