Hi guys, with the bad news that he will have his left leg removed, what are the options for a gen4 buddy to keep his manual 165 without the use of a clutch leg...seen a few manufacturers do the one with the trigger type one on the gear shift, comes in about £2000...lot of cash. Are there any other workable options do you think?
There's a lot of options. You can do a motorcycle style clutch (pull handle). The other option that I've seen is a lever that pivots and actuates the clutch pedal. He'd use his left hand to grab the lever and pull it down to work the clutch.
wow sorry to hear that about your friend. the cheapest option out there that i can think of it to affix a cane to the pedal. that way he can use his arm to push the pedal. then the other hand to shift. which means he will not be holding the steering wheel when he shifts. everytime. i've seen this several times at work. it's always bewildered me how people do it.
Sorry to hear about that, but glad that he is doing OK. Reminded me of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aktV1OC4h0M
It could be possible to rig up a solenoid where the slave cylinder is located that is activated via a button on the gear stick. Have a chat to an automotive sparky about it, you'd just need a simple mounting bracket, a fuse, a strong solenoid, a relay, a bunch of wire and a momentary switch. A lot cheaper than 2 grand I'd say.
add a second button to the back of the right side of the steering wheel? Or somewhere else? There's no problem adding more buttons, just make them NC instead of NO so you need to have both unpressed to engage the clutch.
Oh that's what you meant. In that case, I'd make use of a really torquey geared stepper motor with a worm gear and an instant disengage/"fade in" engage circuit. Or something like that.
Might be easier to go mechanical with this one, like a flappy paddle on the steering wheel for the clutch thats fed in through the bezel around the steering wheel .
You're probably right lol It's always a challenge finding somewhere to put a contol that's supposed to independent of both the steering wheel and gear stick.
It's sad to hear it's a way of life can happen to one of us ,but if it was me put in auto box only will need one leg to control.
i have a few buddies in the army who have lost a leg or both and one of them has a 89 Cressida with a 7mgte swap. He has a fake leg from the hip down and he said with a little practice hes still able to drive his cressida and believe it or not he can still maintain a fairly decent drift line. So all hope isnt lost, i'll ask him some more about it and maybe get you some more info because i know he looked into the alternate clutch setup
Thanks for all your input guys.As you may know we put forward a suggestion on the Celicaclub.co.uk for any help as a duck clutch kit came up for sale.the members there started donating into an account and before we knew it we had over £1000 ,which enabled Chris to recoup the money and he now has the clutch kit ready to go on his car, once his rehabilitation has got to a stage where he can use it.great news and a show of generosity from people Chris knows, and a lot he didnt.
