when the engine is cold and you take the cap off, should you be able to see liquid? how do you know when its full? (overflows filled to mid level between min and max)

That's how it is on my car. Not sure if that means it's supposed to be that way or not though.

When its cold and the engine is Not running it should be up to the overflow hole on the neck of the Radiator- And when running it should be just below the neck, But always check your fluid with the vehicle running to see how much of the fluid is running thru your system.

    (Especially in A.V  )

but to answer the question yes

you should be able to see fluid if not wetness in the top of the rad

I think what happened was, when I changed my coolant, I screwed up on the flush and didnt add enoguh water to feed the system, came back with a hot engine, not overheated but hot. Added coolant, burped the system but did not add more coolant after that, I think the void that was filled by burping left the gap at the top of the rad, but it still cooled fine. Not burning anything out the exhaust so I just topped it up today and I hope thats all she needs, besides a new rad cap.
