Ok, 3sge engine, 89 celics gts coupe.
At work i drive it alot and it does fine while driving. However whenever i park it for more than 5 mins the engine floods and i have to hold the gas pedal down to get the excess gas out of the system or it will die, after a few seconds it idles normally again and runs fine. The longer i leave it parked and not running the worse it gets, i checked the pressure regulator and its not leaking fuel through the vaccume line so thats not the culprit. Im thinking either a sticky injector or the cold start valve is leaking fuel into the intake. Seems to only have this problem when ive been driving it for awhile, like 10 to 15 mins at a time going about 40 mph or so. It wont do it for me in my driveway for some reason it only happens when i drive it some. I tried to get it to do it when in my driveway, let it idle till it warmed up completely and then a bit longer then shut it down and waited for a bit to see if it would do it again and it didnt. but later while im working it does it practically every time. This is really annoying and wastes gas so i wanna fix this asap.
thinking about disconnecting the cold start injector from the fuel system and see if it still misbehaves.

Has anyone had this issue before?

    Flooding...

    Hi Spy,

I occasionally get a similar issue. Also I'm pretty sure that my cold-start has never worked properly because every morning I always have to re-try the starter to get it to fire up...
It always fires right up when warm except occasionally I'll get that rough, loaded-up feel that needs to be revved-up a bit to make it clean-out. This hasn't happened much lately, but I know it'll rear its ugly head eventually...

Occasionally I am also getting this issue. My trick is to turn the key to Ignition ON. Don't start the car yet. Wait a minute for fuel pressure to build and then crank the engine.

I believe this issue is due to an old fuel pump and fuel filter. As long as you get high rpms at startup your cold start injector isn't clogged and is working.

    Good Luck

Been awhile but i did finally find out what this issue was, the engine wasnt flooding after all, but in fact it was the fact that my head gasket was failing and it was causing me to have a sputter that would go away only after the chaimber cleared of coolant. i know this because it went from not a big issue to something that would happen alot and then the gasket finally went out. However ive since put well over 100 miles on her since ive changed the head gasket and the problem has yet to occur.
if your having trouble getting it to start while cold then yes it is the cold start injector, and if it fires up easier if you turn the key on and off a couple of times before you crank it then it is either not getting enough fuel pressure or you have a leak in the system causing your fuel pressure to drop while not running. as you said likely either a weak pump or a clogged filter, id change the filter first and see what that does and if it still happens then move on to the fuel pump. if it is your fuel pump then you dont want to wait till it dies and leaves ya stranded.

as for this topic, i am letting it die since ive solved my mystery.
