its been a while since ive been on here since i bought a different car but i still have my sexy celica. anyway, ive narrowed all m problems down to a code 12, and i replaced the whole distributor already, so what other things could make the distributor think it has an error? any ideas?
code 12 is a starter problem. trust me on this one. your ecu is not seeing the starter is engaged while the engine begins spinning.
so the starter itself? not anything else specifically? im not going against what your saying, just wanted to know if it was anything else
ok and my last thing is, should i buy refurb? or get a used one from the junkyard or off the net? do you have one for sale
i was looking around and i think before i change out my whole starter im going to replace the starter relay, its only 13$ and its worth a try, but i dont know if the relay is relativly easy to get to or not.
i really appretiate the help guys imma replace that relay on sat. and ill post an update, is there any other circuitry that could be screwed up?
Is your car starting now? If it is then replacing the relay will not help. From what Mafix is saying there is a signal that goes from the starter to the ECU and your ECU is not receiving that signal and as a result is giving you a code 12. That would be option # 3 under Trouble Areas in the chart above. So I will try and investigate the signal for you and how to test it.
ok so its not the relay, but theres some wiring or circuitry that isnt cooperating with the ecu, am i looking for specific wiring or a whole new starter? once again i do appretiate you looking into this because i am baffled.
Well according to the BGB you should look in the ignition section. So check in the Technical forum ST162 Ignition System
If you just want to test the ECU check out FI-107 It says STA -E1 should have between 6-14 volts when cranking. Make sure you look at the following pic first and get your meter hooked up right. Don't want to fry the ECU -'ve connector of the meter goes to E1
thx alot for the help guys, im going to try this out first thing in the morning, how do i access the ecu? and does anyone else have any other things i could check?
yea...put a new starter in, same problem, checked the ecu, ecu is fine, my plugs looked a bit ugly so imma replace those but damn, i cant think of anything else, it'll come on for a sec, then it'll just shut off
imma check my pickup coil and igniter next, if those two are good and i have new plugs imma pull a handfull of hair off my bald head. and the timing is on point, to the T, my neighbor reset it for me once he put in the new dizzy
Okay so it starts but shuts it self off right away correct ? You have checked the codes again and it is still showing a code 12 ? Does it seem like it is shutting off as soon as you turn the key back from start to ignition ? or does it run for a few seconds in the ignition postion ? If you start it a bunch of times does it eventually get warm enough to stay running ? Did you have to remove your intake manifold ? Your talking about the gasket that goes between the intake manifold and the head.
yes, i fixed the gasket between the head and the manifold, it was done about a month and a half ago, and it was running after that. We checked the timing two days ago and my mechanic neighbor said that my timing was fine. i want to update that now my check engine code just blinks, no stops or anything, just keeps flashing the whole time i use the paperclip dealy, also near the rear of my intake manifold i have a plug of some sort thats not going into anything and i took pics to see if anyone could ID it, ill put pics up in my next post. i just put new bosch platinum plugs in also because it seemed like the old plugs were just ugly, but it didnt make any difference, ive never had a code like that before, does anyone know what it means?
