everytime i start the car first time in the morning and start driving, the car takes a while to shift at fourth gear (A/T). but by the time the oil temp needle goes to the middle, it shifts normally from 1st-4th gear. is this normal for the celica? trans oil was changed last year. and engine oil was changed every 3k miles. i warmed up the car first thing in the morning, but only for a couple of mins. i never wait for the oil temp to go normal (needle is in the middle).. is this normal for the celica 1988 st 172k miles thanks
wow! if it is normal, then the car consumes more gas first thing in the morning then. thanks for the info.
it should actually save gas depending on how long your drive is. the engine is most efficient when its warm, the car doesnt shift into 4th so it runs higher RPM making it warmer faster. so in the long run it actually saves you gas since your spending a higher percentage of your time driving with a warm engine. does the trans also shift short? so it doesnt really let u get above say 4000RPM? cauz it does that until the engine is warmer in the corolla so just curious.
i can get it above to 4k rpm on 3rd gear. but cruising at 40mph in 3rd gear, the rpm is in the 2,800 range thanks for the help.
Completely normal. My 3sfe does that. Basically, it keeps you from running the engine too high, before it's warm! If the engine isn't warm, there is less chance, of you brining something up. It's an older car, start her up in the morning, go get yourself a cup of coffee, and let her warm up! I like to wait at least a minute or two before I put her in drive. I'm more worried about my idle being at about 1500 for the time, that the car isn't warm... I never noticed it when I got it, then again, the temperature was warmer... I would assume, this is the engine's way of warming up as fast as it can, just like us rubbing our hands together, and creating some warmth, through friction... Is this right, or normal?
Auto transmissions do that in a lot of vehicles, not just Toyotas, it's completely normal. Letting it warm up properly in cold weather will help. High idle in cold weather is completely normal as well. The engine warms up faster by creating more combustion, and keeps itself from running rough/stalling.
ALL car's rev higher and idle higher when cold. Geeeze. It's holding his car in 3rd gear MAKING him rev higher, so his engine will warm up faster. Not shifting early so it doesnt rev high....
they normally do both if that makes sense... it wont rev too high cauz its bad for a cold engine but it also holds higher revs then normal to get the engine warmer faster.
no it will rev as high as you want if you sit there and floor a cold engine it will redline still but it's definetly not good for a cold engine to do that, but im pretty sure there's nothing that prevents you from doing that
They only thing I could really recommend, is letting the car warm up in the morning, for about 5-10 minutes. Finding that my car isn't broke, priceless... lol I've never owned a brand new car, so I don't know how they act, which is why I asked about the shifting, and higher revving. Thanks for that info!
oh really?? i guess that the newer ones must be different. as i said im just going on what a newer corolla does. cauz it doesnt let u hit the red line when you are in drive and the engine is cold.
all toyota automatic transmissions do this. they will not shift into overdrive until the tranny is up to temp. mind boggler: newer ones have a level switch and if you are going uphill, they won't shift.
someone must have blown their car up between 94 and 2000 so they stuck a limiter on when it's cold cuz my 94 doesnt have it
