Broken Sunroof?

I hit the tilt button on the sunroof today and nothing happened, and when I hit the open button I was greeted with a terrible clacking noise.

Do they ever pop off the track, or is the motor and all that broken? It sounded quite similar to when another car in the family had a broken window motor.

Make sure it's oiled before you put a new one or try to fit the old one in! Get some good grease stuff and put in ere'

Well I couldnt move it to get the sunroof liner out, so I took the big headliner out and decided to just take it all the way out and see what was up. The only problem is, it wont come out! I figure theres more bolts holding it in under that headliner, but I cant figure out how to get to them. Any tips? My book is way too vague to be of any help.

I finally got the motor to come out, look at whats left of the gear

i'm pretty sure its not supposed to be so cracked and pockmarked. could this be whats causing it to skip over the mechanism instead of opening it?

That gear is rusted away, I bet the other one is too

Looks like you need to pull the entire sunroof and rebuild, rustproof it 1st

Reason you can't get it out is because it's bolted and glued in
Here I started in one corner and cut thru the foam/glue, You need 2 people as it's damm heavy

You could save a ton of weight, time, & money by fitting a glass roof. Check Mafix's thread

The one inside the sunroof was a little rusty, but not nearly as bad as that one. I'm going to check out the gear on the one in the junkyard tomorrow and see if its any better. Fingers crossed.

The glass roof IS tempting, but I didnt see how mafix set his up to be removable. That and the fact of the sun destroying the interior/making everything much hotter. Unless I tinted it...

EDIT: I found a way better gear in a car at the junkyard, but when I replaced it there was one big clunk noise and then it spun freely :banghead Guess I'll ask Mafix about his awesome sunroof.
