One of my stored Celicas developed a charge problem. Turned out the alternator went bad and I replaced it, no biggie.

So my question is: after storage, what is the usual culprit that causes the alternator to go bad? Is it usually corrosion on the brushes? Is it the regulator?

Neither I would think, brass/copper/graphite don't rust easy

It's more likely corrosion on the windings or eaten thru a wire

Next time check the brush rings for continuity, I've had a few with dead windings lately

hey rick, this mechanic that specializes in alltracs at 148th/fraser hwy was telling me that the hood insulation could also be a culprit. with the age of our cars, the insulation could be sagging a little bit and could be impeding air flow to the vents on the alternator. it's possible, but most likely only one of multiple problems with st162 charging systems
