I have a problem and i need to know if any of you guys have ever had to do this. I bought my 88 all trac from a junkyard, the junkyard had towed it from a shop who said someone brought the car there to be fixed and then never came back for it the shop was unable to get a hold of the owners. So i bought my all trac for 50 bux from the junkyard, with not motor or tranny. It had plates on it but they were from 03. Is there any way i can run the plates to find out the owners name, because i can pull a title scam all i need is the name of the owners. The car is in Primo shape it just has no motor or tranny, but the harness is all there. Anyone have any suggestions i realy weant to save the car, i was almost thinking i would take the Vin off my 89 GTS and swap it to the all trac, the years wont match but theres no difference in the cars.

have you tried talking to the DMV? maybe they cna help you out. either them or the cops should have a file with all that info in there.

Definately check with the DMV. Also, make sure the junk yard gave you a bill of sale proving you bought the car the from them. Just in case you find the owner and they decide to say you stole the car.
You may end up having to get an attorney involved to do a lost title search.

    Man...simple solution.

You need to write an affidavit up explaining how you got the car, who you bought it off of specifially, even if it wasn't in the previous owner's name. Then you need to have that signed by a notary public. Then you simply take that, along with your license and valid insurance on the car, to the DMV, and they'll issue you a new ownership.

I had to do this when I bought my 88 gt-s, since I lost the ownership, and hadn't got it changed to my name yet, and I couldn't get ahold of the person I bought it off of.

It's pretty easy though, I just searched for a sample affidavit on google and just put one into my own situation.

    Good luck!

Unfortunately...every state has different laws and stupid ass ways of doing things. Definately still wouldnt hurt to check with an attorney.

Yeah toytuner, it may be different in your state...I did some research on "lost title" on my local government's website, but since it's Canadian law that I'm going on...it's probably a little different where you live.

Try searching google or something on what you can do, or even call the DMV, and ask them what steps you have to take to get a lost ownership back if you haven't got it in your name yet, and you can't get ahold of the previous owner.
