A couple of issues.

Well call me crazy, but after looking at the rack from my GTS, it does have an adjuster!! Problem is, it's jammed up tight against the firewall when it's in the car. Here is what it looks like.....


Sorry it's sooo dirty, but thats it right there in the middle where the rack and pinion shaft intersect!!

 

Pick-And-Pull has lots of 5SFEs come through the gates, but if the cars not wrecked, keep walkin' usually not a good sign!!

 

So if you were to tighten that it removes play from the steering in which direction? My whole steering column has a couple of mm of play in it, ie. sit in the drivers seat, grab the steering wheel and you can move the whole column up and down a bit, would tightening the adjuster remove that, or is for side-side slop?

 

Ok this sounds like you've got a totally different problem, if it's moving up and down it's one of two things. First does your car have tilt steering in the column? If yes, then the control handle and it's gear might be worn out! Second if you don't have tilt steering column, then you need to check the four mounting bolts up under the dash that hold the entire column, they are probebly loose or missing. The rack adjuster only works if you have side to side play when turning the wheel!
