A/C evaporator case removal

I'm having water leak out of the A/C evaporator case under the passenger side dash. (87 GT-S). To begin with, the fools who worked on the A/C last left off the drain tube. I put on a drain tube, but it still leaked. I was going to take the tube off and try to seal it better to the case, but now I'm having a hard time getting it back on.

Anyway, I suspect there is probably gunk built up in the evaporator case causing the water to back up after a certain point. There's often a moldy smell coming out of there.

Is there anyway I can take out the lower evaporator case without taking out the whole evaporator? I don't want to have to evacuate and recharge the system, which is what I would have to do if I follow the BGB instructions. I don't have a vacuum pump, and although a friend suggested I could use "thawzone," I'd worry about getting moisture in there if I try to evacuate/recharge it myself.

Any ideas? I really need to take out the lower case to get the drain tube back on properly.
