Hopefully I can get this car running and in tip-top shape sooner than later. Just sold my BMW 540 for this one for the following reasons:

    1. Love the classic look of the ST162
    2. Gas economy
    3. Stick
    4. Toyota

Nonetheless, as with any older car, many things need to be done in order to get the most of it. Hopefully I won't be spending a fortune to get this on the road. Mods will be later down the road. I want to keep the car bonestock as long as I can before the mod itch hits me.

    Immediate needs:
    Tranny rebuild/swap (sync are toast)
    FLush/fill fluids
    Tune-up
    Heat

    Secondary:
    Suspension bushings and struts
    Interior restoration
    Rust and paint job

I should mention thought, that all power features on the car works near perfectly.

^Sometimes people replaced the OEM dual-tipped muffler with single ones.
Great colour on that 162 - you don't see that light silver very often. The red interior hurts my eyes but I guess it was the 80s, after all.
If you click my link below you can see my 165 has the same red interior - you get used to it after a while.

good projectcar ! I really can't imagine anybody liking that red interior, not even because it's red, but EVERYTHING is red...it's a bit too much :). Maybe you can use some black interior parts to create some nice combination black/red !

In follow up on that idea...the paint is not that great anymore, so a plasti-dip your car would look awesome with the red/black interior !

But first, very happy you will restore the car and enjoy driving it :)

i hate the color of red interior....my guess would be to replace the whole interior.....like i did....everything swaps right in.....i went from blue to black interior in about a day....but i got lucky and bought a spare gts with black interior for 300 clams. then sold a red car with blue interior for 1100

The worst interior is the brown one, you can't do anything with it either.
For the red I'd swap out some panels with a black car and have a red/black interior,
    Jwagner did this

Other than that you have a good base for a cool car

the car is straight... with a very minor dent on the rear pass quarter where the tail light is... actually if you look at the pic, the tail light is cracked... as for the red color, who know what the future holds for it... hehe..

My '87 GTS had the same red interior and on top of that the car was burgandy!! Car is now white and it's getting satan black paint on the remaining interior pieces, but hell it's a racecar after all!!

Only the dash and center stack are going back in, so I'm just painting it all satan black to cover up the ugly ass faded red, dash mostly!

Now riding on B&G's paired with 7th Gen GTS rims in 195/50 series

I did this yesterday... needs some minor alignment... I love the ride and handle thus far... when I get to save some money I might try to go sleeve over just like what racerb has done with his car... can't tell teh difference between a 205 vs. 195 size of rubber... i was a little upset that the rims got scratched when I had to mount the tires... the machine we used is not so up to date...

    While on the lift...

    90% done fixing the A/C

I finally got the a/c button working and I can now turn my compressor on/off with the press of the button... Unlike before that the compressor was always on when I turn my blower up, it is now working as it should... I still have to fix the a/c button light and replace blower resistor, and hope that by replacing the blower resistor, my auto fan speed will also work... my car is equipped with the auto climate feature that I think was only found on the all-trac... Then, i also need to re-charge the a/c to get the right cold air...

Next in line is part out and clean the interior, DIY the body work and paint, and install my audio system...

Car looks really good, between deck/roof projects I haven't worked on any of my cars in about 2 weeks. Now the weather is keeping me from stripping the new GTS, but I will get back on it as soon as the rain lets up!

You can get yourself some mason's twin (string) and hold it tight from both ends at the body line your looking for and either tape it or tie it off to jackstands. I use this trick for alighning the suspension but it also works for other things, like placing molding on the car. I'll take a picture of what I'm talking about a little later.....

Loving the paint... All in all, how long did it take you? How much was the whole job?
