Hey everyone, first time poster here. I've been lurking the forum for a while now and have searched in vain for my issue; if someone can direct me to a thread that pertains to this issue please do. My 88 st starts up fine but after the engine heats up(or after I move the car apparently) the engine dies. It started almost 2 weeks ago when it just wouldn't idle. I could take it out and as long as I kept the rpm's up it'd stay on(This problem seemed to happen out of nowhere as I hadn't done any work on it recently). I cleaned out the throttle body and IAC valve with MAF sensor cleaner and it ran fine for a few days but then it'd occasionally stall at idle and low rpms and it got worse until almost every time I hit a stop light it'd stall on me. I've replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter(also had to replace the EGR valve modulator due to carelessness), cleaned out the IAC valve and MAF sensor, and checked for vacuum leaks. About a month ago I replaced the ignition coil and gaskets to the distributor but I think that's unrelated to my problems now. Here's a link to a video of where I'm at now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52Gss6uLGZ8 This is was shot after the engine warmed up, I've since added gas because the fuel level was low and nothing seems to have changed. I've also noticed that on occasion idle speed would fluctuate shortly before it stalled and sometimes after the car dies the car will lose power(electricity). None of the doors lights or indicators will turn on and after a few minutes it'll all just randomly come back on and I can start the car. Any help will be greatly appreciated! I'll be at work today but I have my smart phone and I'll try and stay posted on this thread to answer any questions and consider any comments. Thanks in advance!
3sfe or 3sge I'd check the big hose from the air intake to the throttle body for cracks check/clean up your igniter ground and other engine & tranny ground points
my bet is also on the intake rubber hose having a leak. duct tape is your best friend for that. also make sure the AFM is plugged in
does it get fuel??? Afm connector out is good, but cracked pipe only makes it a rough ride not stalling.
Thanks a lot for the replies guys, but I believe I found the problem. When I was going over the basics I overlooked some corrosion on the underside of the wires that make contact with the positive terminal on the battery. I noticed it b chance by touching the wires while the lights were on. I cleaned them up and put some grease on all the contacts and metal bits around the battery and all appears to be well. It doesn't pay to cut corners! Thanks again!
grounding issues...how standard those are for our cars lol Glad to see you worked it out ! Now go out enjoying that car.
