So I've gotten almost everything off at this point except the distributor, camshaft pully, and the camshaft themselves. Looking at both the toyota service manual and the haynes manual I'm still a little confused on how to remove the camshafts. I can see the bolts attached to the camshafts but from what I've read you have to align them properly before removal. I'm not sure how to accomplish this. Thanks!
Take some white paint or marker/crayon/something and mark them on the gears where they're connected. Then when you put them back in just make sure the marks line up.
To remove you don't need to align anything Before removing you do need to put a small bolt in the exhaust cam gear to lock the spring down or it'll jump and isn't easy to retension. I'd mark the cams with some paint like 4gen says, there's more than 1 set of marks on those cams and they can be a pain to re-assemble I always turn the crank 90 deg from TDC before I do anything on the cams - prevents any damage that could happen to the valves or pistons
Thanks for the input guys. I assume you have to remove the camshaft pully as well although I'm having one hell of a time removing it. It says to take a wrench and hold the camshaft as you remove the bolt but it won't budge. Any suggetions?
You don't need to remove it, just lift the cam up There are two cap bolts under the pulley but they are easy to get to
