When I upshift from 2nd to 3rd, if the tranny is cold or I do it too fast, 3rd gear grinds and makes me look dumb. I'm pretty sure the synchro is screwed, but could it be anything else? Also, how do I fix this?

welcome to my world, um, it happens to me pshifting to 4th. and downshifting to pretty much any gear.

    my solution

upshifting: Be gentil with it, give it a second in nutral position before putting it in 3rd. that what i do with forth, I believe the trick is to shift into gear when the rmp has droped to the right speed to match the rotation of the transmition.

downshifting: double cluth, shift out of gear and release clutch in nurtal. hit the gas so the rpm shoots up and pres the clutch and shift it in when its about at the right rpm to match the trans.

mechanicaly, you can try new tranny fluid, i hear some work better than others. Did anyone have any luck with a specific brand?

How/where do I put new fluid in? I know very little about how to work on transmissions.

I dont mind my synchros being a little funky, its forcing me to learn the new driving techniques. As for tranny fluid, i think you have to pump it out, I would recommend a shop do it if thats the case, but I do like the idea of DIY, so if anyone has some points im sure both of us would be greatfull

    wtf gtfo with a pump

there is a bolt at the bottom of the tranny (on the rad side) to empty it. then one higher up to fill, u can use a siphon pump to put some in or a long funnel that u can bend up a bit is how i did it. fill it till it starts coming out of the fill hole :)

Pumping the tranny, while sounding like an awesome idea for a speedy fix, is not the answer. A pump forces the trans fluid in at some his PSI which for you guys with orginal trannys is a bad thing. More damaged caused than its gonna fix.

You need to drain what fluid you can out of the tranny, and then re-fill. Repeat this process a couple of times after running the car for a couple minutes, sitting in each gear and let the car move. Hence(drive around block, drain tranny, re-fill, do it again) until you are satisfied. The tranny will only drain a small amount at a time.
