I just bought these gauges from kevinyang and I just have a few questions on how to wire them up.. I was wondering if I could just wire it into the original dimmer switch to keep it more oem? Also where would be the best place to get a power and ground from behind the cluster? Heres the front of the switch, It can change from green to blue.
looking at the back of the cluster, we'll name the three connectors as A B C from left to right, according to BGB, the illumination of the cluster runs from C1 to A12 C1 being "TAIL fuse" (this would be 12v) A12 being "Light Control Rheostat" (this serves as your dimmer AND ground) basically you can wire this up to be only either blue OR green if you want to have no extra buttons, or if you want to be able to switch colors you can still get rid of the aftermarket dimmer
That switch and dials are not oem, I've never seen them before either The only parts listing I know of is - http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/g_E_1987_TOYOTA_CELICA_ST162L-BLMVFG_4.html Please be warned that the water temp gauge is totally incorrect
No they arent OEM, They are made by a company named Alfa Otto. I just wanted to see if I could keep them one color and splice the aftermarket dimmer into the stock one. Really? I didnt even notice
All the stock temp gauges are wrong and I believe a cause of so many of the h/gasket failures My stepdad blew my h/gasket saying that it was nowhere near the red but blew the hoses bad and warped the head, as there was no water at all and the gauge still wasn't in the red. I was mad as .... but it wasn't his fault which led me to mod my gauges with translucent vinyl which I fitted like this and glows in the dark. You shouldn't be driving either when cold - another flaw in the gauges and some cars are fitted with warning lights which go off at around 50degC The voltmeter should never go over 15V either, but most are real optimistic I'm from Africa where the speed limits are different, so I marked my speedo as well I have spare red and green strips for those who want Those look like 3pin led's with colour capabilities?, I think the only way to use them is to remove the old dimmer and substitute it with the new one. I'm no expert so I'll let one of the boffs tell you how they work Our JDM's don't even have the dimmer, I found these two types but don't know how to wire them in either as I don't see a plug and can't find a JDM wiring diagram So I'd like to see your switch and wires to compare
like i said...C1 to A12 where it says "illumination" on the left hand side bottom If these are LEDs, i'm not sure as to how it has a dimmer. When you use LEDs with the oem dimmer only slightly dims the LEDs before it just completely turns off, so that aftermarket dimmer may be better. Use aftermarket dimmer: (Tail Fuse 12v (C1))--(+ on the aftermarket kit)--(Any ground) Keep oem dimmer and throw away aftermarket: (Tail Fuse 12v (C1))--(LEDs)--(A12) I would try both to see which dim behaviour you like better. And I agree with stig, basically if your temp gauge is just past half, there's already something wrong with the cooling system.
Woah......Im really glad someone told me this... Mine stays at half but Ill keep a look out. Thanks for the Diagram and Info Guys!
Wow that's really good to know...my stays at halfway as well. That's good to know...I plan on putting an aftermarket. Temp guage in soon. Just don't have the money at his time...looks like I need to do it soon though.
