I need to replace my battery in my 1987 Celica ST. My problem is - The ones that AutoZone is telling me will fit are about 2 inches taller than what I am deducing will fit in there. I am basing this on the height of the old one and laying pieces of cardboard (of different heights) on top of it while closing the hood and checking for it getting crushed. I even put a piece of cardboard in there that was the height of the AZ battery and the hood would not close (by a LOT). Does anyone know the largest height that can be put in one of these? Or that can offer the height of their battery? The height of my old battery is 7 inches, but it was actually the wrong type as it had terminals recessed into depressions on each side (messed up the function of the battery hold-down bracket). It is difficult to measure something that is only accurately-measured with the hood closed. I guess I could go in there and compare the sizes and buy based on that, rather than what the tables say. I have the metal shelf as it came, along with the white plastic tray (measuring about 10.25 x 7 inches). Also, I would rather not modify the location of the battery (trunk, etc), but I would consider altering to a side-terminal battery. Any thoughts? Advice? Similar experiences? Thanks, Tracy
That sounds right and fits the tray measurements of 10.25" by "almost" 7" ---- but the height is where I am running into a discrepancy with what AutoZone says will fit. I think I will just have to go in there and shop for one with a tape measure instead of what their computer says, because a 8.875" tall battery will definitely not fit in here lol. Thanks
That is what AutoZone's website is saying, the 35 size. But I am not seeing it. I will check, but that measurement they give online is almost 2 inches taller than what is presently in there. (Still scratching head) Thanks EDIT - I actually just stretched some twine straight across the front of the engine well (with the hood up). I know there is some upward curve in the hood toward the middle, but right at the corner of the battery nearest to the fender it should be pretty accurate. I then stuck a tape measure down in the corner of the battery tray nearest to the fender and the front. It read 8.5" of clearance (to what would be the "top" surface of the hood, not counting reinforcement of the hood or the insulation underneath it). The AutoZone website says the 35 size batteries are 8.875" tall (and I am assuming that is not counting the posts at the top - I dunno). Thanks
