transmission problem need help.

  1. Hi, im new to the boards. I have an 88 celica ST auto. I have a question regarding about my tranny. Whenever i change the shift lever from Reverse to Drive, I always hear a big Bang on the tranny, it seems that there has been a gap between the gears, and while im cruising and let off the gas for a while and push it back in, i hear the same thing everytime.

also after starting the car first thing in the morning, the car doesn't shift into 4th gear. it takes a while when the engine has warmed up enough till it goes to 4th gear.

are these normal for an old car? the car has 170k on it

I need help on these. thanks....

hi welcome to the board, your banging is more than likely either warn out cv's or maybe poor motor mounts, i have never experienced anything in the automatic tranny making that kind of noise, im thinking you have something external on the motor or something that is flexing when you change direction and when you stomp on it hard the engine torques(check your motor mounts)

as for not shifting into o/d it is not fourth gear its o/d (they are different) there is a temp sensor the tranny computer uses to guage wether its warm enough to go into o/d, go to celicatech.com and go to the bgbonline section, look up 4th gen bgb(big green book)(toyota manual) you should be able to find the temp sensor for it somewhere, check the temp sensor.

also there is a black box in the cab somewhere(i think) that controls the shift points of the tranny, that could be an issue

a bad strut can also cause the clunk when you change direction
