Got a GTS hatchback. Seals in the rack and pinion are leaking bad. A quart of Powersteering fluid a day. I need to replace this thing. How hard to get it out and what does it take. Any write ups would be awsome. I haven't been on here in ages. Site has changed so much. Did a search got nothing relevant.

It would be much much easier to pull the engine and replace the rack. Im sure it can be done with the engine in the car but it wont be easy by any means.

well.... if you drop the sus member, and the exhaust flex pipe. you will have pretty easy access to the rack. pop off the lines, 4 bolts, the tie rod ends. and it will fall out.

Ya its easier to drop the rack out the bottom than remove the engine. They are really only held on by two brackets and then the two arms...and the power steering fluid lines of course

I dropped both cross braces underneath and had alot of room to remove it...took maybe 45 minutes. Which reminds me that i had to redo it cuz its leaking again.

If you dropped both cross braces, did you have to put a jack or something under the engine for safety?

nope. the 2 side mounts hold it fine.

FYI do not remove the motor mount brackets from the cross member. just pull the big bolt.
