Steering issue

Discussion in 'Suspension / Steering' started by monstercelica, Apr 21, 2012.

  1. I am having a problem with the steering on my 86 celica. the problem is is some days the steering on it is just fine but when i start driving it and the more i turn sometimes the steering will get hard to turn then get really easy after a certain point into the turn, it makes me swerve when im going around turns. its like its not getting any fluid through it for a sec then it does. and my steering wheel makes a squeaking sound when it does this too. would anyone know of what the problem could be. i took my power steering pump out to replace the pressure line cus it had holes in it and it starting doing this after i did that. i think it might be that my belt isnt tight enough? idk im gonna go check that out soon. was hoping someone might know what is wrong with it

Sounds like a loose belt & air in the system

Tighten the belt - you may need to get a hammer handle or similar to wedge it out while you tighten the bolts.
Check the fluid and then let it idle, turn the steering lock-to-lock a few times to pump out all the air.

If this doesn't fix it I'm afraid your pump is damaged

When did you last change the belt?

could also be fluid leaking on the belt?

-if not a belt issue maybe super dirty fluid?

  5. ok thanks guys im gonna take the lid off the reservoir and turn it lock to lock and see if that will do it. cus i know my belt is tight enough and i know my power steering pump is just fine as it was working just fine before i changed the line. so there must be air in the line. exactly what else i thought it could be. thanks for the help guys
