i hope you put back in some gear oil. S boxes were later corrected from ATF to 75w90 gear oil in the toyota manuals.

The FSM calls for this tranny to have Dexron. Absent a TSB calling for a change, I think it would be a bad idea to swap something as different as ATF to gear lube. After 27 years and 200K miles, my tranny still shifts like it did when new. There is no justification to change from ATF to gear lube simply because later models so. Toyota would have issued a TSB.

every manual says to use ATF in our boxes, that's a given.
there is plenty of justification from plenty of boxes inspected by multiple users across multiple forums. this isn't a sub-10 year old car where toyota will issue a TSB. after 25 years of service, it simply does not affect that many customers to matter. toyota doesn't inspect their 25 year old boxes, but for those that still have this car nowadays, we are the ones who can give feedback on how our boxes are after 25 years of gear oil or 25 years of ATF.

this is something specific to the early S53 and now that most of these boxes are over 150k miles, it is becoming obvious as to why toyota changed the fluid requirement when the box is physically the same in every way.

    quoted from Toyota Nation:
Sometime around 92, the recommended fluid actually changed for that transmission. 90-91 listed ATF as the manual trans fluid. 92-93 listed 75w90 as the trans fluid, supposedly to increase life for the synchros. The synchros are not very strong in the S53 and a 2nd or 3rd gear that grinds is common with 150,000+ miles. Mechanically there are no differences from 90-93 to necessitate the fluid change, so really either can be used.
