some very simple tests for our cars.

#1 Rule - Buy a box of paper clips!

    Check Engine Light:

Well this is the easiest way to see that there is something wrong with your vehicle. There is a picture of a motor in the lower left hand area of the gauge cluster. If you've never seen it then turn the key to the on position and see if it turns on. It should. If it doesn't then you have a burned out bulb.
If you do see a light then you'll need to read the code that is being sent by the ECU. the only way to do this (unless you have the 6000 dollar tool) is to take a paper clip and jump the TE1 or T1 and E1 pins together. The ECU will then unload all the arror codes stored in its ram. The codes read like morse code. Short blinks with short pauses indicate a number and long pauses with no blinks indicate a new number.

    Fuel Pressure:

This is one of the harder things to diagnos on our cars. You will need several tools to properly diagnose this; a vacuum pump with a gauge on it, a "T" fitting that goes in line between the rail and pump or a special banjo bolt for the top of the fuel filter (found in most master kits), and our handy paper clip. You'll want to depressurize the system. This is easily done by slowely opening a connection between the pump and rail (easiest being the top banjo bolt on the fuel filter). After the pressure has bled off you'll need to connect your gauge, whether it be the banjo style one connected on top of the fuel fiolter or a "T" fitting connected at the bottom of the fuel filter or right in front of the gas tank. Then disconnect the vacuum line at the fuel pressure regulator and connect your vacuum pump there. Using the paper clip connect +b and FP in the diagnostic connector. Then turn the ignition key to on.
Pump the vacuum pump to below 20 inche of vacuum. now read your fuel pressure. it should be between 27-31 PSI. Now release the vacuum on the pump and read the fuel pressure. It should be between 33-38 PSI. If it's high you need a fuel pressure reg. If it's low you need either a new fuel filter or a new fuel pump.
