why do I have to downshift into 2nd to downshift into 3rd

and I assume I can't downshift into 2nd very well because the snychros are going...but I'm hoping I just have a problem possibly related to each other so they're both an easy fix :D

    could it be the linkage?

does it grind really bad into third? why are you going to second first?

DOUBLE CLUTCH! give it a lil rev while the car is in neatrul before you shift gears, it helps the trans.

heck yeah it does Ive basically mastered that technique and no more grinds into downshift 2nd at all.

i had to do that on my 5th gen which had NO syncro for 2nd or 3rd.

double clutching and rev-matching doesn't help

and mafix, if I'm in 5th, and let's say there's a turn coming up that I need to take...I can downshift into 4th smoothly, but it WILL NOT go into 3rd, no matter what, unless I put it into 2nd gear first, I don't need to disengage my clutch, but I do need to physically put the shifter into 2nd gear, and then back up to 3rd, and it will go in no problem

It doesn't grind on any upshifts

    and

it somewhat grinds if I slam it (downshifting) into 2nd gear, but if I put a little pressure on the shifter I can get it to slide into 2nd without grinding...

sounds like second gears syncro is going. As for 3rd gear.... thats odd, check ur tranny fluid

    tranny fluid is ok

it doesn't feel like a synchro problem though...it feels like the linkage is kinked or something...it's weird since it doesn't do it on the upshift...

I think I'll just take it to my buddy who's a mechanic he might be able to figure it out if he's able to drive it....it's kinda hard to diagnose a problem like that by just telling you about it....

sounds like possibly a bad cable or a bent shift fork.

downshifting is always harder than upshifting ;p

Don't slow down for the turn, just cruise into it and then punch it just after the apex of the turn.

Remember kids. Slowing down is just a suggestion, kinda like putting pants on in the morning. Ever seen a sign that says:
    No Shirt
    No Shoes
    No Pants
    No Service?

I don't like punching it in 3rd, it doesn't go very fast unless it's above 4000rpm.

Grr! You should know that :p

Last time I drove an NA Celica was almost three years ago. Been a long time, and then I don't own a celica either. Just a Tundra ATM

Well if I downshift when I'm going under 40km/h it doesn't grind, so I've learned to corner like a fucking grandma.

    Fuck.

Tried changing tranny fluid to the GM synchromesh yet? Might be worth a shot.

Yeah I was just reading that other post...

I'm thinking maybe I should just check the fluid... My mechanic put the tranny and engine together then in the car, and it had SO many issues I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't fill the thing all the way....
