Fuel Injection System - Electrical

    Hey,

Does anyone know whether the 4g Celica's fuel injection system is current or voltage controlled? Also, anyone know what the operating voltage is for the fuel injectors, and what a safe continuous voltage might be (to not toast the injectors)?

    Thanks,
    Teran

(This is about the 1st gen 3S-GE)

I actually just checked some of this yesterday. This is only from my understanding and if it's important information to you, it would be better to get from a book, but it seems that the fuel injectors are on a current controlled circuit, with seemingly the same voltage as the alternator putting out or perhaps dampened down to around 13v. The voltage was steady, so presumably the ECU (or whatever goes to the injectors, directly) changes the resistance in line with the injectors to open and close them. I tested trying to open an injector with a 9v battery, and I could hear it tick open, so that seems to be adequate as long as the battery is well charged, but I did test with a clogged injector and can't really say for sure if it worked or not.

If I remember correctly, the nominal resistance for the injectors is 13.8 Ohms, but that would be another one to double check.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Thanks,
    Teran

Yes, a current controlled circuit (called a a peak/hold circuit), uses less power,
makes less heat and the injectors last longer

Voltage should be 9V, 12V can damage them!

I believe they are high resistance injectors, 14 Ohms
Low resistance items are 2 Ohms

Just because it clicks does not mean it's working properly, they need to be ultrasonically
cleaned and the filters replaced, you cannot clean them any other way

Please read http://www.witchhunter.com/injectorimpedance1.php4 for more info

Are you sure about the voltage? I'm pretty sure they are meant to be where they are right now. Anyone else want to test their injector wiring for that? Not sure if it states what it's meant to be in the manual or not. If that is the case, I wonder if it's related to some of the problems I've been having lately.

Thanks for the link, it was helpful. I know, I just figured if it is clicking, it *should* be opening, so it at least lets me know it's probably clogged rather than the fuel injection wiring is bad.

    Thanks,
    Teran

9V is the test voltage, it works on 12V but for milliseconds at a time,
if you apply a constant 12V (battery voltage) you can damage them

    What problems?

Ok, I tested with 9v, but the system is between 12 and 13v. It should be a steady voltage though, right? Since it's current based.

The problems I've been having are all listed in http://st162.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=4811, thanks for asking.

    Thanks,

No - it's pulsed and the current is dropped after the injector is open to save power/heat
