hey guys, i' haven't been around for a while but i'm here with an idea. I am currently working on picking up a 2nd gen 3sgte to swap into my gts, and was wondering how hard it is to convert it to all wheel drive? any help is appreciated guys, thanks!

sprey is right about the gas tank - on the st162 it is under the rear seat, on the st165 it is right at the back under the spare tire well.

The rear suspension is completely different and there is no way to mount the rear diff on an st162 without some serious fabrication. Also the exhaust tunnel is not large enough to fit the center diff and driveshaft. So unfortunately your answer is very hard, if not impossible. Believe me I really wish it could be done, there'd be a lot more alltracs on this site.

This is the rear subframe from an All trac it holds the rear differential. You would need to stick one of these in there

The 162 (left) & 165 (right) front subframes are different. The 165 curves to the drivers side at the back to clear the tranny/rear driveshaft.

Didn't know about that one. I need to get myself a trac.

    Consider this...

    3sgte + alltrac trans= est. $1200
rear suspension, differential, and gas tank= est. $500
What you could sell your celica for= est. $1800
    everything I forgot= est. $500
fabrication, blood, sweat, and tears= priceless
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Grand total= $4000
which happens to be the same price you could buy an alltrac for - the fabrication

That's all just ruff guestimation, but I'm sure realworld figures are in the same ballpark.

Out of every AWD Swap I've ever read or seen, its only worked 10-15 times and then usually it was never just fabricate this...it was fabricate...tweak...fabricate...tweak. Take your projected budget and toss it. It honestly is not worth it. If you want AWD, find an AWD car.

This is another one of those
"if for some reason you have the money/experience/tools/time/training/etc. and you REALLY REALLY want to do it,(usually specifically because nobody in their right mind would do it, and now you will to be "different")
    then by all means,

there is a very small chance you can make it happen, maybe.

I've read about it before too. Only people that seemed to accomplish anything, were custom shop monster truck "lets build a tank out of random junkyard metal" type of folks, with years of experience in engineering and what not.

I've heard a few times that RWD converted celicas were fabricated using older Ford F-150 parts. I believe this is possible. Not cost effective. Not practical, but, possible.

Honestly though, it would be almost entirely custom, heavier then intended, so/and hopefully you'd try to add reinforcement too, and that would be harder then hell to add/weld/change the frame/reinforcement portions of the car, AND keep it all straight!

Probably not worth it. Fun idea, but I'm not trying anytime soon. As said, just buy the platform you want and start from there.
