Broke 3 oil pump to block bolts...

Discussion in '3sge' started by comatoseghost, Jan 27, 2009.

  1. Yay. :x
I didn't lube the bolts at all.
    assuming that's why they broke...
My suggestion = lube all bolts with clean oil while torquing them down to spec.

Now. these broken bolts are in my block, and are 10mm bolts (nice n tiny) And honestly, I'm a bit worried about how to go about extracting them.

    Suggestions? Jokes? Motivation? ....anyone?
    please help.

    There are a couple options....

#1 is a broken bolt/screw remover, looks like a drill bit but it basically just faces the opposite direction, if you can dig that in far enough then you may have some luck with that.

#2 I read on the internet just now, and it makes sense, weld a nut to the top of the broken bolt if you can, then just unscrew with that welded nut.

    Good luck!

funny note, masturbation causes huge forearm muscles. keep that in mind!

seriously, how hard were you pulling on the wrench?

  4. Thanks much rye.

I got so frustrated, I got out of the garage before getting a closer look at the damage
    or breaking anything.

well lets see. using a torque wrench with a range of what like 0-100 (ft lb) I was trying to adjust for the proper spec, or at least ball park.
spec torque (without looking it up) is something like 46 in lb.

Indeed, i am aware that most torque wrenches suited for decent ft lb use, are actually not accurate or reliable under 10ft lbs or so, but still, I'm trying to be mr. proper procedure to the best of my ability here...and then I forget to use any lubrication whatsoever.

So anyhow, as I was working around the pump, one bolt snapped, and I remember thinking, "whoa. something seems to be wrong here, I should stop what I'm doing, and evaluate the problem"...so then when i tried another two snapped at once.

(and I was all "oh snap son")

2 snapped at once? i wonder if something is hitting the block and cocking the pump?

  6. That's sound reasoning. I'll certainly check the mating surface.
    Thanks.
