Got a tired 89 3sfe, was looking into doing a 5sfe, not sure which year motor to do with for the easiest plug n play? heard it was a easy swap because the ecu would compensate for .2 bigger motor. Also heard all i would have to do is use the sensors off the 3sfe. also if there was anything diff with the axles, mounts, anything else etc.?

Wanted some input on this and what i would have to do or even make it a 5sge if that would be possible without major probs

Keep your exsiting box, mounts, shafts etc
You may want to convert to GE type axles later

Try to find a later 5S with crank sensor (95-)
Use your 3S harness, distributor etc, but leave the 5S injectors, manifolds on.
These later motors are more powerfull than a 3S-GE gen1/5S-GE swap

5SGE - yes - if you already have new GE 87mm+ pistons, custom rods and a GE
    head/distributor/TVIS actuator/ECU?

I was looking into a motor from jdmenginedepot.com they are located in nj close to me. They have 2 5sfe motor for like $750. 1 is a 92-96 camry 5sfe and the other 97-01 camry or at least that is what it says they are from. people i talk to said the older the motor the less diff it would be.... also could i just bolt my 3sfe tranny right to it with no complication

what do you mean by keep existing box and you would recommend a 95 or lata? i dont know anything about the crank sensors good bad whats up about it .

road and track. au has a great 5sge guide. sounds like 90-91 5s bottom.

The 95- FE versions use a different ignition system + MAP sensing.
Your easy option is to use the exsisting electronics (MAF), harness, cover etc with the new manifolds/motor

The later FE box is essentially the same so no benift from changing it unless your syncro's are munted
Later (95-) GE boxes have dual syncro's but the gearing is essentially the same.

    90-94 FE
Yes the 90 motor will be easier to fit but it's down on power compared to later versions.
The cam covers, manifolds etc are all interchangable on these versions
Power will be equal or more than a Gen1 GE, torque is much higher.

    5S-GE (myths busted)
To be correct what you're refering to is a 5S-FGE (5S-FE bottom + 3S-GE top)
For a proper 5S-GE you need the FE block & internals converted to GE specs
ATS Racing sells a prepared block for $3500 - not a cheap option but popular with horsepower freaks.
Anyone who tells you a 5S-FGE makes more power than a tuned 3S-GE is lying and doesn't have
the figures to back it up. ie Compression is something like 7-1 and the FE headers are so restictive they kill the motor.
Early GE gen1 headers are better but not much.
We have seen numerous 5S-FGE's over the years and none has lasted more than a few months!

Hope this helps, we try to speak the truth around here

ok thanks i will keep all this is mind.... it only comes as motor so i will have use my 3sfe tranny, but my 2nd gear syncro is getting worn slowly grinds once in a while, how do you change a syncro? also to convert to ge shafts all i have to do is take off the flange on the tranny right? does the tranny have to be out to get this off or can you take it off while in the car?

2nd gear syncro requires a gearbox rebuild.
Fill it with 80w-90 instead of ATF

The driveshafts/flanges pop out the box, apart from draining and the wheel hubs there's nothing mechanical involved.
    No removal neccessary

just fyi guys i would be warry of APR. been there, they just buy wrecked hondas at auction and resell the parts. so that 5s would just be usdm. probably high mileage.
