After 15 kms both hoses should be hot, not just warm.
Sounds like a partially stuck closed/open thermostat.

the worst part is i thought about re-soldering the pins before i put it in, then i got in a hurry to make sure it fit... :cuss

Today I've gotten the thermostat and water pump changed. On my way back from the garage I got the engine nice and warm. Still I got no heat from the heater, and when I parked I noticed, again, that white smoke comes from the front. As far as I see it comes from the radiator. Any tips what could be wrong? Fan? Last time it happened I could fill up about half a litre with water/coolant before the radiator was full again. I haven't checked the level of water now, since it was too hot. The radiator is new, but I've had rust in the system, could it be clogged allready, after about 60 kilometres driving?

^Even after 60 kms, yes, it could be clogged again. Remember, all that rust is circulating like blood through your veins.
However, I'm not convinced that's your problem yet; it'd have to be pretty heavy rust/sediment to clog up your rad that fast. Stig pointed out it may be your heater core and that's still a possibility.

Air pockets perhaps? Has the cooling system been "burped" to get all the air out?

Did you check the lower rad hose? (*Careful - don't burn yourself*)
Is it hot, warm or cold after a good run?
If it's mildly warm or cold, and the t-stat is new, you've likely got a blockage in rad or heater core.

White smoke from the radiator: where exactly? is it leaking and evaporating causing steam?
Is there still white smoke from the tailpipe after it's fully warmed up?

the lower rad hose is hot, as well as the upper one, after the run. The smoke appears to be coming from the back of the radiator. Could it be as simple as spilled coolant on the outside of the radiator? Since the temp gauge doesnt show any abnormalities?

Let it stand and have the fans kick in a few times, if it still does it there may be a small crack somewhere

If it's spilled coolant on the outside, it should burn off after a few minutes.

If lower rad hose is hot, all the valves and flaps are opened manually (and correctly) and still no heat, then I'm leaning towards blocked heater core.
I can't think of anything else it would be right now.... :banghead
Have you tried to disconnect the heater pipes at the firewall and flush them out yet? (Make sure to turn the selector to "HOT" setting so the water will go through the core.

im gonna try to flush the heater radiator next. Just have to locate the hoses. Maybe some warm water would be best? Fill water in one of the hoses and let it pour out the other?

As for the smoke, I will try tomorrow to let the car stand and idle, watch for the fan to kick in and out and observe the temp gauge. I hope the smoke will evaporize, if not then i guess the car will simply explode

    Are you losing water?

For the hoses, they are behind the inlet manifold. You need to blow each with a hose
several times till it runs clear

I see on your car they are pretty difficult to reach, I marked it in red but I doubt you can reach with a hosepipe
    [IMG]

Pull one off the heater valve and the other off that pipe below the distributor (yellow)
You should also pull all the hoses off and blow everything out

Na, this one's got no colour :fingersx , only decent LHD one I had

    Valve must be open (hot)

Check the valve moves freely, if not there's heaps on Corolla's, Camry's etc

You can also install a flush "T".
It allows you find a space on the hose further away from the firewall and more accessible.

ok heres my issue. did the long fix. everything functions (unsure on heat as i cant run the car, but all mechanical stuff functions as it should, so im assuming it works.) however i cant get low fan speed to work.
    -i have deleted the ac...?
-i have two boards and everything functions on both except low speed, so id assume the issue is elsewhere?

-btw. button leds will be red here shortly :D, also figured out leds are pole sensitive. i figured if im gonna take the damn dash apart again i might aswell do the led/dash light/hvac light upgrade aswell

Fan speeds are controlled by the blower resistor. It's located under the fan blower motor and easy to replace; it's held in by only one screw and just unplugs. Usually one of the coils is broken or burnt out, resulting in the loss of the corresponding fan speed. That dried grey goopy stuff on the coils usually cracks off too, though I'm not sure of its function.

sweet. i was guessing that would be it based on the wiring diagram. but didnt know what it looked like or its location. thanks, ill check it out now.

    -BINGO! broken coil. thanks.

Figured I would post this here.

My unit gets power but nothing happens when I push any of the buttons. No fans, no changes from foot and head to defrost etc. Is this the solder problem or something else? I was told that there is a relay behind the glove box that was causing the problem by the person I bought it from, but I dont know how trustworthy they are.
