hey im running a 3sfe in a 89 ST right now and i think when i bought the car i got a crappy engine as a whole, and from what i read, the 3sfe is probably the worse engine out there. my question is, if im going to swap in a new engine, what would be more dependable/ fuel efficient? a 3sge or 5sfe? i would seriously getting turbo but i run an automatic.

U shoulda known better when u bought it, a ST was not designed for performance. im not too knowledgable about swaps, but I can assure u that a 3SFE is not tha worst engine out there. I also have a 89 ST but as i said before, i didnt buy it for performance, rather for everything else. For my winter car last year i bought a carburated 88 Corolla wit a 4AF engine, that by far is lota worse than a 3 SFE. IF you really wanna run a performance 4G, i would sell ur car, one cuz it a 3SFE, 2nd n most importantly, ITS A AUTO ;). Find urself a GTS, a trac, or if u lucky enuf jus buy Mafix's Nemisis

You have the bearable engine, my friend had a gt with the 2SE. OMG, that thing was horribly slow.

IIRC, 3sge would have less swap issues and I'd get rid of the auto while I was at it too.

heh i appretiate the opinions but i wasnt asking about performance, i just said fuel effeciency and reliability, i understand that its worse engines u\out there but if there is def. a better one for what im looking for, why not?

The 3SFE isn't really a bad engine. Makes decent power, good reliability if you take care of it/it was previously taken care of.

3SGE swap would be the easiest thing to deal with. 5SFE will create some unnecessary headaches that would be worth it if you were doing a ST185 swap.

Probably already been said, but: 3SFE is a million times better than 2SE.

My 3sfe runs great (now that I gave her a full tune-up.) 141K, about 30 something mpg. Personally, I want more power so it's coming out soon. I read somewhere (3sfe's vs. 3sge's) the 3sfe was more reliable, less problematic.

    hmmm
i highly doubt that. maybe less parts in the head...
the 3sge is a awesome mix of performance, mileage and reliability in one. imo. its all how you drive it and tune it.

it's not like it's a crazy powerful motor that needs intense maintenance. just treat her right and she'll do the same to you.

Still got it. Gonna move it again in the garage today. Damn I need to get a storage shed just for all the extra crap I keep ending up with.

Yah go 2se. I am guessing mine puts out around 70 now. 260k and a bit of abuse will do that to a motor.
