I have 2 st-162 verts one automatic and the other is a 5 spd. I am looking at swapping the engine and tranny out of the one with the automatic with a 4th gen 3s-gte similar to this one:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/JDM-Toyota-...ng-harness-ecu-ST205-SW20-Motor-/281809885481

my question is what transmission would you recommend i get to go with the engine to make this swap easy? I know i will need to cut a hole in the firewall for the clutch and shift cables but I am more concerned with will I have any issues using an mr2 5spd? or what 5spd would connect to the engine easiest with minimal cutting or would my 5spd thats connected to my 5sfe work?

Im swapping the auto tranny into the car with the 5spd as well... body is banged up so i dont want to put to much power into it where as the one with the auto tranny currently has a mint condition body and trust that chassis to handle more power

first car has the auto and second is the one currently with a 5 spd and has frame damage

Really there isn't a good answer to this question. You can use the S53 that you have in the 5speed. You can use the S54. You can use an E153. In your case, I would use the S53 that is in your non-slushbox car. That would be the 'easiest' solution in my eyes.

I don't recall if the holes are pre-drilled or not. There may just be grommets in place that you can remove to install everything. If not just use a drill to make a hole then use a reciprocating saw (minding any wires and stuff). If you use a MR2 transmission you'll have to convert it to FWD from RWD by moving the gear selector from one side to the other.

Refer to previous answer. You'll have to transfer all the manual transmission stuff to the automatic one anyway. They'll all be the same amount of work.

Awesome news. Now I just hope the transmission can handle the power. I do have other questions with using the s53...

A.) Will the current starter location be an issue or will I be fine with leaving it over the tranny?

B.) What flywheel will I need so I know what flywheel and clutch I should buy.

C.) What axles should I run? I have a feeling the axles I have currently might snap with the increased power.

Another question about the engine... will the stock 3sgte intercooler fit under the hood or will I need to run an aftermarket? (kinda hope I need to run an aftermarket one because it will be more efficient and better looking)

Thanks again for the help :D I look forward to buildning my celicas

    a) if your current starter location is under the exhaust manifold, then you cannot use that starter/transmission/flywheel combo. you will have to source an s54 or e153 with the starter on the trans side. s54 is known to handle the gen4 3sgte just fine.

    b) the flywheel should be just the stock one that comes with it. these engines came with the s54 so it's not any different from the 5sfe, perhaps asides from weight.

    c) standard 5sfe axles should do.

primemr2.com is a good place to learn/source parts for gen4 swaps. they should supply all the goodies as well. they normally do gen4+s54 swaps to mr2s all day.
