Nor sure if it helps anyone but i have the service manual for this car, it ranges from 88 to 00 and covers a very wide variety of things. Its about 400 mbs in size and in pdf format. Its not the haynes or chiltins book. Im working on a way to upload it so all can enjoy. here is an interesting example of what is in it lol.

also has things like how to properly test alternators, tps sensors etc.

Ok, if the weather holds out tomorrow ill be removing my cold start valve, all injectors, throttle body and idle control valve. going to be cleaning all the gunk out of the fuel system from the filter on up, fuel lines and fuel rail etc. Got all new seals for the injectors so i wont have to worry about leaks, crap i forgot to pick up a new seal for my distributor while i was at it. Guess ill be hitting the parts store tomorrow before i get started tearing it down. And yes i made sure to get the complete seal kit for all 4 injectors, they tried to just sell me 4 o rings and i laughed at them. I will also be installing a reasonable filter in the pcv line to keep the crud out of the intake so i wont have to clean it again lol.

Before i completely remove the injectors im going to leave them connected to the fuel rail, then lift the whole assembly up and put a small dry water bottle under each one and pressurize the system to see if any of them are leaking fuel into my engine. Going to use zip ties to hold the injectors to the fuel rail so they dont go shooting out of it lol. Wont be cranking the engine, just turning the key on and off a few times. The fuel pump kicks on for a few seconds and then off again if the engine dont start. should be enough to check for sticky injectors. Suckers are no doubt still factory so they are no doubt dirty and in dire need of a good cleaning. Should make for an interesting day of chemicals and cleaning.

Oh ill also be recalibrating my tps while im at it, thanks to the manual i have i know what its supposed to be reading and exactly how to adjust it

Great and informative thread! Keep the picture reference coming... I've owned my GTS coupe for almost 1.5 years now and drives like a champ... totally bullet proof minus the electrical gremlins once in a while... I do also have the same issue with the dancing battery needle and lights... on occassion my bulb out light will come on/off when I have my lights on, but all lights are fine... could very well be a sign of a failing alternator...

BTW, you can do the roll-on paint which can be a good learning curve if you are into DIYing your paint job... http://www.st162.net/forum/showthread.php?5338-89-GT-S-Liftback not bad for a first timer but probably would be better if I do it the second time... or I might be contemplating on DIpping the whole car...

other than lowering the car and putting some gen 5 wheels, everything else is stock... and I'm currently trying to finish my custom sub box... then next will be the whole sound system...

i have a bit of body work to do before i even consider painting it, but i was thinking about a really sweet shade of orange with a black roof and hood.
also have plans to shave the doorhandles and remove the rubber bumper strips from the sides. keep it nice and smooth

Done finally, sore back and a few busted knuckles i got the job done. cleaned the injectors and the throttle body and i got to say if there is any of you whom hasnt done this yet you should do so. Feels like a whole new car now, idles so smooth now i had to check my guages when i came to a stop, thought my engine died on me. it didnt die, just was idling so smooth that i no longer felt it like i used to, acceleration is much better now as well.

Niceee work... Holy mother of god that is some black death in your TB.
I cleaned mine out recently, for the first time since buying the car 6 years ago... Nothing close to that bad.. Glad to see it getting some love.

How were the injectors to do?

A bit cruddy, and pretty much everything was in the way of getting the fuel rail out of the car so it turned into quite a job but was well worth it. my little filter should catch any oil from getting back in there so i wont have to clean it again any time soon, i plan on putting an 90 degree elbow on the line so it dont have to loop like it does to keep it from kinking. the old pvc line broke like a twig and was covered in oil when i removed it. On the intake the biggest issue i had was the dang large vacume line that went to the idle up for the a/c. Had to bend the line to get enough clearance to get the rail free of my injectors. I plan on removing the a/c anyway so when i do that annoying sucker is going bye bye. Btw moused, remember those long leds i ordered for my brake lights? Dont ever get them, sure they was bright enough but after just a couple of seconds they all burnt out. i removed the light socket from them to find out they have a very small resistor inside to reduce the voltage to keep the car from burning em up, problem is they needed a higher wattage resister. all of the resistors burnt to a crisp, the leds are still good but i think im going to get something different for my tail lights.

Well that sucks something fierce... are they salvageable at all?
What'd you have in mind, as an alternative?

Also I came across much of the same with the TB removal.. hoses completely rock hard.
So you just cleaned the injectors, to a massive improvement? Didn't think it'd be so dramatic..

How much did you pay in parts? If anything.. I can get some complete seal kits for $20 an injector.. seems a little heavy.

I paid only 17 dollars total for all the seals to do all the injectors from orileys. however they didnt come with the little plastic cap for the tip of the injectors and mine crumbled into little bits so i had to improvise a little bit so the bottom seal would fit right. I cleaned out the whole fuel system from the filter on up. Most of the improvment in horsepower was probably from me cleaning the throttlebody and iac. So other than the carb cleaner i got, 17 for the seals, and less than 5 for the two hoses i had to replace. Pvc hose snapped, and so did the large hose on the bottom of the iac that leads to the center of the intake. The set you have in the pic above may be more expensive, but it seems to come with more stuff like the screens and the tips.

This is what i did today, repainted the needles on my guages. Hated the old faded orange, yes they used to be orange and are now faded to yellow. Scraped the old paint off the bottom of the needles and replaced it with red. The tach and speedo needles have a built in limiter so they are easy to put back on where they are supposed to be. Dont completely remove the needles on the small guages like the fuel guage. Instead remove the guage, remove the two small screws on the guage face and pull it off, and then if you look closely at where the needle goes over the top you will see where it is actually two seperate pieces held together by two very small melted tabs. I cut the melted parts off the tabs and seperated the two halves so my guages wont need recalibrating. then after the cleaning and repainting, placed it back where it was and used my lighter to remelt the tab pieces together.

paint only the bottom of the needles

and yes they do show up red in the dark, not that bright but that was like that before i did this mod lol. Eventually im going to find a way to install a red led behind each needle so they glow bright red while the rest stays white.

It's the little things.. small details.. that make a car pristine. You're definitely on the right track, loving it.

Might be a little fiddly, but a single red LED behind the needles would work fairly well. I'd imagine you'd need to box it off so the light doesn't leech across everything.
Any chance of a night pic when you're able? I'd be curious to see the red light as it stands..

As i said before the needles are about as bright as they was before but its daytime now, ill take a night pic tonight and post it after work. I know how to install a led for the needles and isolate them, will just have to wait till i get me a dremel so i can do some special cuts in the clear part.:reddevil

    heres a night time pic.

Arrggg. got a pretty major oil leak, all i know about it is it is definately oil, about 2 quarts from driving 100 miles, and that it is coming from the rear of the engine. Could be valve covers or distributor seal, or rear main. is there anything else on that end of the engine that could be leaking? i have a pool of oil on the transmission so im thinking somewhere above that.

Any ideas of what it is?

You mentioned your dizzy cap had oil dripping from it before, yea?

I couldn't tell you in how many kms this happened, but I was 2L down, all pooled on top of the transmission.
This was definitely from the dizzy cap for me. I'd start with the distributor seal, and go from there... Even if that isn't the major leak, at least another job is down..

Thats what i was thinking too, im cleaning and removing the distributor and valve covers and putting new seals and gaskets in em, probably going to paint them as well while i have them off. Also have a pretty cool idea about making a custom set of plug wires to run down the valley under the cover that bolts between the vlave covers and then making a new cover for it. should look pretty slick when done you wont be able to see the plug wires at all except where they go onto the distributor cap.
planning on doing all this tomorrow along with find the squeeling noise my gf's santa fe is making.

Ok got most of it done today, tomorrow she should be running again and hopefully no more leaks, had issues aquiring my valve cover gaskets so i cleaned the old ones and re sealed them using some silicone, it should hold for a bit.modding my plug wires tomorrow o run under the cener cover between the valve covers and then going to make me a new center cover so it should look pretty good with the new paint.
the trail of oil it left everywhere i parked
