So I'm planning on a little trans service.. I'm getting some mixed info, specifically on changing the filter - does this need to be done?
Given I have to drop the pan to drain the fluid, should I just get the filter done while I'm at it?

Also, do the ST162s have a magnet on the pan to catch lose flakes? If not, would there be harm in putting one in?

I'm getting some mixed info on the capacity too. To refill after I drain it, how much would be needed (given some remains)?

Personally I would go ahead and do the filter while in there. If the fluid is dirty, it stands to say that the filter will have that dirt in it. Yes they should have 3 magnets on the pan. Make sure to put them back in the EXACT spot you took them off from. I cant remember the capacity for the auto, but what I did is take of the return line from the cooler to the trans and let it drain from there whilst pouring in new fluid from the top. This helps get the old fluid out of the torque converter, and get fresh stuff in. Then check when everything is back together. Hope this helps!

Ahh, that's an awesome idea.. Def helpful, thanks..
How much would you say you'd need to pour in, to clear it?

Well I poured until the fluid coming out of the cooler looked as red as it could be! Also make sure you have another person with you helping and a hose attached to the cooler. It will make life so much easier. Also since the engine needs to be running when you do this, have good communication between the two of you so the tranny doesnt run dry. My trans fluid was BLACK when I changed it so I went through like 12-15 bottles before it was all done and red again. It all depends on the condition of the fluid.

Looking at doing the differential fluid, too.

I'm reading up ATF from some sources, 80w90 gear oil from others..
Any recommendations on this, in an auto?

From the sifting I've done.. the fluids are separate - diff and trans.. So there is no potential for overflow between either?
