Hey guys! I'm new here and just getting the hang of things. :) Well I have a 1989 toyota celica gts in great condition with a 3S-GE ENGINE.

My problem.. I turn on the car, warms up fine, but after 3-4 minutes, the idle jumps between 750 to 1100 rpm for about 20-seconds. After that the idle levels out. It drives fine afterwards, no stalling, no overheating, no more idle jumping. Throttle body is clean, spark plugs replaced, and distributor cap replaced. This only happens when the car has been cold for awhile.

Now I THINK it has to do with a few things.

    1. Air in the coolant system. How do you bleed air from 3s-Ge engines? I don't see any bleeder valve. Also do you bleed with the valve to the the heater core open or closed? (I have to set it manually for heat to go into the cabin)

    2. Sensor? Could it be a sensor? if a sensor was bad wouldn't it turn on my engine light?

    3. IAC. A tech told me to disconnect the iac valve to calibrate the idle speed but the iac on the car does not have and electrical connections attached to it, only a coolant hose and a few air hoses.

Any help people. I'm 19 and live up in vancouver, bc Canada. Thanks!

The IAC valve in any car, usually goes bad by getting clogged w/ carbon. Probably needs a new IAC.

To bleed it, just remove the radiator cap (when cold!) Turn on the heater to high w/ A/C off on the vents, start the car and let run at about 2500rpm until the fans come on. While the fans are on, top off the coolant! When overflowing after top off, you should be all set!

Do I turn the heat on or not? Someone else told me to turn it on, also, I drove the car for 10 minutes and the fan didnt come on, but the car does not overheat.

But its weird because I drive the car for like 10 minutes and the fan still doesn't come on, but the car does not overheat.

Did you replace the t-stat? The t-stat may be stuck open. You can try jumping power to your fans to make sure they work. When the car gets to temp, the t-stat should open and both hoses should be about the same temp. (hot) The cooling fans should also come on at this point. If the fans don't come on, but the hoses get hot- you probably have a bad temp sensor.

The idle issue, is more than likely your IAC valve though.

How do I check the IAC if it is good or not?

I had the same problem. It is your iac, its wax filled on these cars and gets crappy and doesn't work properly on time, I fully cleaned mine out and it was still surging so I ended up just blocking the lines to the intake manifold and disabling it. Works with no problem now, it just means you have no warm up idle, so you will either have a really low idle on cold start up or a really high idle when running at operating temp ( just depends how you adjust it)

^alright I'll try cleaning it out. I have an extra one also, just need a gasket. Can you please tell me how I would block the IAC if cleaning it doesnt help?

    Thank you!

That's a very crude wag of doing it. (Thank you very much ;) ) but it does the job

You can hide the blocked of hose somewhere so it looks better ( I just pulled mine out so you could see. And you can block the manifold off a lot better by not using a bolt and making a block off hose instead, I just didn't have the time haha

ahh better picture. so do you run the car with low warm up idle?

Yeah it just idles a bit low on start up and maybe just a tad to high at full temp but you can mess round all day with it.

i used to have a toyota tercel that had the same issue, rather than pay the crazy high price to replace it i just disabled it and then adjusted my idle when the car was all warmed up, the only down side was when it was cold out i had to hold thet hrottle a bit to keep it running till the engine warmed up. But then it was fine. It all depends on how you adjust things. All that valve does is adjust the idle based on how cold it is. Old cars didn't have that feature so you had to keep your foot on the gas till it warmed up. Btw you can buy gasket material and just make your own for it. its not a compression gasket or anything so the typical cardboard gasket combined with a little silicone should work fine.
