Hey guys it's been a while since I have been on, but I am still around. Anyways I am getting a strange noise from my 88 AT and was hoping you guys could help. After I start the car (I always warm it up about 5 minutes) when I engage the clutch and take off the noise starts. It almost sounds like something is turning/coming on. The sound is a audibly low "whooo" comparable to a vacuum cleaner. It is not real loud but is definitely there. When I come to a stop and put it in neutral the sound continues for about 30 to 40 seconds and then stops, sounds like something is cutting off. From what I can tell the sound seems to be coming from around the drivers side. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
ok guys, here is a little more info....when parked after I start the car and let it warm up the sound starts immediately after I give it some gas and then stops after about 15-20 seconds. When I stand at the front of the car with the hood up I hear it loudest when I put my ear right over the area where the cooling fan is. I hope this helps. I thought initially it was clutch related but now it seems that is not the case. I hope it has nothing to do with the transmission (bearings etc.) I am not really hearing the noise around the trans, please help guys.:scratch
Hmm.. I have a similar noise in my Celica.. its only there when the clutch is engaged, or in neutral, and sound like the interior climate fan. It sounds like it follows rpm a bit too. I got a tip that it might be debris/filth in the fan engine, so I checked it out, but I didn't find much. But I am quite certain that its the fan anyway. Might be the same on yours? I did suspect a worn or loose belt at first.
Sure sounds like the IC pump to me - the bearings are going. I've got the same noise on my 88 ST165. Gonna buy the bearings and try to replace them myself. If you get your front end up on ramps, or just put your ear to the lower front end by the battery where the IC pump is located, you'll be able to confirm. I'll see if i can find a photo for you....
Here is how the IC pump looks from underneath. It's at the upper left in the pic: More pics at this link: http://www.gtfours.co.uk/pics/ic/165_185_205/ic.htm
Hey Rick, I was hoping you would chime in and confirm this, because I believe I saw where you posted that you were looking for a IC pump. Thanks for the pic, I could not find one anywhere. When I get a chance I will get under the car and confirm from there, but I am certain this is where the noise is coming from. When you get the bearings and replace them keep me posted here or via pm and let me know where you get them and how it went. I will probably be in touch in the near future. Thanks again.
Probably get to this later than sooner, got too much other crap going on right now If I take on this job, I'll post up.
Well I went ahead and ordered the bearings so I am going to attempt to replace them this weekend. I will take some pics and post up how it went and if the noise is gone.
Sounds good. Look forward to seeing how it goes. Do you have the part numbers please? I may as well order them too.
608zz here is what I ordered: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-608-2Z-be...=BI_Heavy_Equipment_Parts&hash=item1e742ec31e
Hey Rick, yes I overhauled it this weekend and the bearings were bad and they were the cause of the noise, but now I have a check engine light. :cuss I am investigating the situation and am thinking it could be the coolant level sensor, not sure. I am almost positive the pump is working because when I turn the ignition on and hit the throttle under the hood I hear the pump engage for a second and the coolant level drops. What I am unsure of though, is that when I do that am I supposed to hear that pump working audibly for a longer period than just a second? Its like it engages and I hear it for a second then nothing. Should I be able to hear it running or not, maybe its quiet, I don't know....:scratch If I hit the throttle again ...I hear nothing, if I turn the car off and then back to the on position and blip the throttle I hear it engage for a second. I did everything to a "t" the way it was described on the gt4 website going over everything twice and making sure so I know I did it right. I will tell you that the bearings are a bitch to get off, get a bearing puller if you can find one. There is also a little trick to putting it back together. I took pics and will post those soon. Any input from anyone would be greatly appreciated concerning the CEL.
Ok, I went out and played with it and now I am under the impression that it's not working right. It is getting power because I hear it engage, but I think something is wrong. When I start the car and rev it I do not see any movement of coolant in the reservoir. I believe I read somewhere that I should see it swirl and I am seeing nothing. Like I said, when I turn the ignition to on and hit the throttle cable I hear a "da da da" for a second, then nothing. I am thinking I should hear that pump run, right? I guess I did something wrong, :colbert I am going to have to resort to getting another pump, but the thing that worries me about that is if I get a stock one second hand how long are the bearings going to last? I would like to find an aftermarket one that would work as well or maybe better than the stock one. I know people have done this, do you know of any good options?
You're right, it should swirl when you blip the throttle; mine does. Not exactly sure what the issue would be as I've never taken apart the IC pump before, so you're ahead of me on this one. Same goes for aftermarket pumps, this is new territory for me and I'll have to figure out the fitment and wiring.
